What would you change about society to make it ideal for you?

Thats a really cool idea. I wish I could just escape. if u really want to, u usually can though. Cuz our money is worth a lot in a lot of places where there is vacancies.

By Gnostic you mean knowledge? I noticed you spelt it with a Big G so do you mean that cult?

firstly i want to say, not all of us r going to agree on wat we think society needs - some of us r going to hav some pretty far-out ideas
before attacking other posters, who hav a right to their opinions, if u disagree strongly or r offended by something someone has said, plz keep it to PMs or talk to one of the mods - trolling is unnecessary and really ruins a decent thread
plz read the BL guidelines
now, wat wud i change about society?
-legalise all drugs, for harm reductions sake, set up harm reduction and rehabilitation programs and put the money we spend on the drug war into helping addicts
-hav much more brutal sentences for murder, rape and child molestation, as well as animal cruelty
-promote kindness towards other human beings and actually hav classes in school teaching kids from a young age how its right to treat other ppl, since their parents dont always do such a gd job of it
-oh and i think both wingnuts ideas were spot-on

I'd decentralize society and the ways in which it governs itself. So this is more an extension of wingnut's community gardens/nap areas, but on a broader, more organizational scale. With smaller communities, social relations become more tight-knit. With neighbors interacting on a more face-to-face basis, they can experience first-hand and consequently appreciate how interdependent they are on each other and will more likely act appropriately in order to keep the community together.

This change would obliterate the perceived/illusory need for bureaucracy and the tendency we've developed for treating people as objects and/or mere numbers in the system, rendering social interactions as commodity relations. These trends disgust me and make me ashamed to associate with society at large, and I would love nothing more than to see us collectively advance beyond such crude ways of conducting ourselves.

Well there is the people ontop who really play a influential role in the makings of conning the masses, and then there is the hard working guys who get rich only because the people at the top have orchestrated it this way.

You say that these people work damn hard and deserve what they get, but I tell you that across the world people work double as hard and get 10000x less.

It is only because we exploit countries like india, china, indonesia etc that we are able to afford things at such cheap prices.

So there is they at the top who are like bankers, which have a very elaborate scheme that directly scams the people, and then there is they who ride on the coat tales of those at the top, i.e mcdonalds owners etc.

I could go on and on...

I respectfully disagree. Y ou have made an unreasonable generalization. YEs, there are SOME rich people who became rish through the means you described. And there are also many rich people who did NOT get rich by the shady means you described.

For you to make the generalization that all rich people are shady, borderline criminal and con artists, is just wrong.

cool thread.

i agree with most everyone above....glad to see that people actually do think about things like change any humanity.

mine is simple. eliminate work politics (drama) there should be strict rules on how you treat your co-workers......and no gossip.........man, walking in a conversation about yourself really sucks. it's like "hey, if you got somethin to say, then say it!" geez. honesty is the best policy :)

- end all logging/clearing of tropical rain forests immediately, richer countries must help those poorer countries who would loose out in this move

- educate children from a young about the 'web of life', respect for self, respect for community (human and beyond)

- bring back the 'coming of age' ritual to include going into the wilderness/natural world with elders and learn from the wisdom keepers

- more emphasis on building healthy communities/networks and relationships in local neighborhood

- POWER WITH nature and each other instead of POWER OVER

- fruit trees/food forests/co-op community gardens in all neighbourhoods

- the integration of humanity back into eco-system functions and base our lifestyles on natures ancient design (bio-mimicry, recycling, ect, ect)

I think the greatest change to society can be made through educational reform. Wingnut mentioned hands on work instead of classroom studies. I agree with this to a degree, and in my school I actually do get to go to internship instead of school for a day. This works out great for me, but not so well for others..In terms of the 'normal' curriculum, I think the average intelligence and quality of education in America's public schools is alarmingly low. Perhaps school should not try to pass state tests and fit through other legislative rings but become individualized, personalized, and more specialized. More importantly, subjects like art and philosophy should not be looked down upon and put beneath math and science. They should be on the same level, so students can truly gain an understanding of the world, and more importantly, themselves. As n3o mentioned, a large problem in modern society is that people are to trapped and obsessed with their own image and self. If people began to look past themselves, become more logical and charitable (in a natural, not self-reinforcing way), I think society could change in a beautiful, revolutionary way.

I've had this thought for a while, thanks for giving me the chance to express it.

Topple capitalism, install socialism slowly leaning towards anarchist-communism. Destroy the 'war' on terror, drugs, and all the other 'wars'. Eliminate police officers, lawyers, and judges. Destroy human greed and selfishness.

!!!
keep in mind, this is ideally, I wouldn't kill police officers, judges, or crown prosecutors. I'd just remove the need for them.

This is great :)

Any ideas on how to start making those changes? Unfortunately i am a little lost on that, I don't know where to start exactly.

Therein lies the problem. The government is too big and too complex for any real change to happen. I think the federal government employs FIVE MILLION people. I did not double check that fact but I recall reading it somewhere.

Also, politicians who actually do have insight and new ideas are not likely to have a chance to implement them. Society generally isn't ready for dramatic change.

Examine some of the more ridiculous and unjust policies in this country's history and how long it took to change them.

Slavery: Existed for well over 100 years. Think about that. It took that long to figure out that slavery is wrong and unjust?

And then, once slavery was abolished, it took over 100 years for people to realize that it was wrong for black's to be treated differently under the law. We still haven't fully gotten past that even 45 years after the civil rights act.

Woman's right to vote: This took, what, 150 years?

Discrimination against gays/Lesbians/transgender. Has been going on for some time and still is, with no end in sight.

WAR ON DRUGS: Has been failing for 70 years or so and will continue to fail until they abandon the war.

Edit: I realize I wrote this only from the perspective of a US citizen, because that is all I really know. But I am sure much of it applies globally as well.

In my ideal world, I would keep most everything the same, except for a few main things I have problems with.
1. Sexual abuse cases would never go unsolved or unpunished; rapists and others that commit traumatizing crimes against other human beings (murder, rape, etc.) would be tortured severely before death by excessive bleeding.
2. All drugs would be entirely legal and regulated by the government. Thorough and accurate drug education would occur throughout school and the legal availability of drugs would begin at age 16 or 18.
3. Comprehensive rehab would be widely available and free to help addicts stay away from their drugs of abuse and reintegrate into society and find a job.
4. The natural rate of unemployment would be much lower; anyone willing to work would be able to.
5. There would be no huge gap between the rich and the poor as there is now. There would still be the rich and the poor, but the gap wouldn't be so fucking outrageous as it is now where all of the wealth is distributed among a very few people while the rest are supposed to meek out an existence on what is left.

.
Is that really going to solve anything? is that going to make the victims feel any better? torture? think about it though, what's a bigger punishment, life in prison WITHOUT any possibility of parole or just dying? and eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. And personally, i'd much rather die then spend my entire life locked away.

  • Not give into extremism as many of you advocate.
  • Ensure that everyone in the world has enough to eat.
  • Provide sex education to all men and women; prevent unplanned pregnancy and STDs.
  • Allocate more funding to education.
  • Ensure that everyone knows how to read and write.
  • Pursue a harm reduction model of drug decriminalization but not outright legalization; that's foolish.
  • Make Election Day a paid national holiday.
  • Provide the same tax subsidies and grants to small business that are provided to big business.
  • Eliminate pork-barrel spending.
  • Ensure also that all who are capable of working do so.
  • Make a major overhaul to the health care system in all countries. None of this is perfect.

* Restore everyone's faith in God and allow them to bask in his salvation.

* Through God's love, remove the need for homosexuality, divorce, abortion, and vice.

* Have people come together and pray together each day.

* Bring schools and education institutions under a uniform doctrine and dispell the lies of evolution, teach young earth creationism, ect.

* Raise the criminal penalities for mortal sins to death, but allow the guilty to repent first.

* Outlaw condoms, ect. and any other devices that promote sin.

* Sent missionaries to far off lands to elminate heretic and pagan beliefs and spread God's love.
