Sooooo... my scent today was balls and fart. :(

The closest I have to suave is Axe Phoenix (anti-perspirant). I am not a true man. I have never owned cologne. Should I?

Yes. But don't just buy the first thing someone spritzes you with at the department store. Try out dozens of samples on the paper strips, narrow it down to 5 in the store, then bring those 5 home and try them each on. The scents can interact with your own natural odour, which you should try to get to work in your favour. Something that smells great on a sample card may smell horrible on you.

It took me a few months to find the one I've been using, and I've been using it for the better part of a decade now. Been thinking about looking for a second scent, just to mix it up a bit, but it seems like a bit of work, and I'd probably wind up with something pretty similar to what I already have. Mostly citrusy, with a bit of woodsy thrown in.

Oh, I didn't mention it before, but I shave with sandalwood scented soap. I don't think that the scent lingers on me, but I sure enjoy it while I shave. Mmmmmmmm.

Thanks for the input guys (and I use the term lightly, ocean ;)).

Dave, this is gonna sound stupid, but what is "the paper strips?" Do you LITERALLY mean the paper strips like out of magazines, etc? Or is that a slang term for where people spritz you in a mall or something!? :D

Also... how do I know what works with my natural odor? Isn't it hard to judge yourself? Would I need a lady to be my judge? Or is it trial and error?

I know NOTHING about this smelling good game. I really like my Axe, but I'll be damned if that'll work for me throughout my life. :D

ryanlaughlin - the paper strips are the little samples the shop assistant will spray onto a strip of cardboard. It can give you a good idea of how the fragrance smells, however nothing is as good as spraying it on your skin.

My suggestion is to go go a few fragrance stores, and just tell them that you're in the market for a cologne/fragrance. If the person is good, they'll guide you through the different kinds of scents (ie, woody/musky or fresh/citrus), then will give you a sample of a typical type in those ranges. You may prefer one over the other, or you may be partial to both. Hmmm, do you have a ladyfriend who could go with you? Seriously, if i were in the same country as you, i'd be only too happy to take you to a perfumery and help you!

Here are a few suggestions to get you going:

Issey Miyake pour homme - classic sample of citrus/fresh
Acqua Di Gio
Hugo Boss - my hubby sometimes wears it and i love it!
A few in the Armani Range are nice- you can get woody/musky or citrus/fresh styles in this range.

It's not a huge list, but you could write them down and take them with you to see if you like them?

:)

i'm really loving the new Chanel fragrance for men, Bleu.

i think it's fabulous smelling on the few men i've smelled it on. it's a nice mix of fresh light smells and dark musky smells. one complaint i have heard though -- the bottles are delicate, meaning, when you drop it on the floor, it will break.

Ooh Cherie was another one in the sample pack that my mum gave me, it's a lovely fragrance :D

It's pretty strong, so I just use a little bit, but it still has a sort of light and floral scent to it. The first time I ever smelled it I instantly thought "I need to make that mine!" :D

or scented lotion.

I can't do these either, they irritate the crap out of my skin and actually make my skin hurt. :(

Pander's mom gave us a whole bunch of Demeter Fragrances, those weird crazy smells like "Salt Air" and "Laundromat". We keep them in bathrooms and such.

I have a bottle of Salt Air somewhere.

Today: Christmas in New Orleans, a true favorite, a clean, pure jasmine smell. I wish it was not limited edition so I could order more!

The only perfume that I've ever liked I found on accident while messing around in Bath and Body Works. My sister sprayed me with one neither of us liked until after shopping some more I realized that I loved the scent she sprayed me with.

Its called Forever Sunshine which sounds too cheesy for me, and because it seems that we're posting pictures of them, here you go:
