Swim notes that drinking alcohol and taking benzos nightly in attempt to sleep is medication abuse and could quickly lead to addiction. If just benzos aren't doing the trick for your insomnia, talk with your pdoc and consider switching to another drug, maybe a z-drug or one of the many sedated antidepressants. If you're desperate for sleep, please consult your doc before downing Xanax, restoring, etc. with booze. If worst comes to worst, ask your doc if you could give seroquel a try (25-50mg). It's very effective for sleep but does leave a huge hangover the next day if you don't sleep 7-8 hours.
As for me, I switch up between remeron and sonata: works like a charm. One night I'll talk sonata and them maybe mirtazapine for
the next few nights. I've found that rotating medications like that seems to ward off, or at least prolong, tolerance and dose raising. Some nights I'll throw a klonopin in there just to take the edge off my anxiety, but since I don't have kpins scripted, I don't do that very often. Oh and some nice bud will do the trick, but I wouldn't mix with meds since pot can decrease the efficacy of some meds.
