First drug I tried was sodium Amytal capsules that my mother had in her medicine cabinet. I was only 9 or 10 at the time. When I read on the prescription it was "to control agitation". Now at 9 I knew what agitation was. The prescription said to take 1 or 2. And being the smart ass I was, I took 4.
They were 60mg blue caps. Half an hour later I felt woozy and very heavy. After about 3 hours, it was 7 oclock, and I'd just had dinner. I went to bed after complaining about how I was so tired. Woke up at 11am the next morning. Never told anyone what I had taken.
I have a love/hate relationship with barbiturates. They're wonderful drugs if used appropriately - that is, for sleep. But for anxiety, benzodiazepines are much better because you don't act like a Mr So Important when you are on them. It's more of a Mr Cool Calm and Collected. Even when angry, if I take them and they work, and my anger disappears. With barbiturates, the anger just stays there, and my inhibitions are gone so I can pretty much act out my anger.
