Opioids What was my pain management doctor thinking?

Fuck man. I had spontaneous pneumothorax 11 years ago that required surgery and my lung/lungs have hurt every fucking day since then. Recovery from the surgery was BRUTAL. Live life as comfortable as possible man!!

Actually the lung pains didn't start til this past year, but they have been pretty bad since. To the point that without pain meds I can't even take a deep breath.

And it IS a sad thing that doctors expect you to go through agony while you wait possibly up to 2 years on a donor match. They wouldn't even agree to look any further into my case as soon as they saw I was on chronic narcotics. I'm fine with all that now, I was told when I was 20 by my doctors I would live to see 21 maybe, possibly 22, but I'd have about a 10% chance of seeing 23, unless it's in the hospital on life support, which I have declined to be put on when that time comes. I will go out comfortably on Ketamine and Morphine, as I requested. That is unless I die accidentally somehow.

So you are going to die within a few years for sure?....i mean....thats what the doctors/statistics say?

As quickly as the disease has progressed from the time I was 18 til now (I turn 21 next month) theres a very high percentage my lungs will not be able to supply enough oxygen to my body within a year, even on the highest amount of supplemental oxygen.

So to prevent the feeling of not being able to breathe, which I would go through for days, if not months, my doctors have agreed to give me enough medicines to keep me sedated or just enough to communicate with people until I die naturally. A pain specialist told me very high doses of morphine block the sensation of suffocation, so that's the plan. The ketamine will be to keep me in another world while I'm suffering, and come down every now and then when I need to communicate or say goodbye to family, friends, etc. Then I will be permanently put under and let the oxygen deprivation finally take over and let me die.

for what it's worth, I watched my mother go through a very similar passing.....she had a giant smile on her face when she passed

Maybe this is a stupid question but have you tried different doctors? That's crazy how they wont let you have pain meds you need while waiting for the surgery.. have you tried shopping around at other hospitals perhaps in another state or something which have different rules? I'd try just about anything to get the surgery and expand my life more than a couple years if those doctors told me that...always good to get a second opinion. My dads uncle was told by his doctor he had cancer so he was so upset he ended up killing himself shortly afterwards. Turns out he didnt have cancer.

Wow OP im glad you get your meds straitened out sorry if my other post was innaprpriate for your situation I didnt realize the situation. Anyway I know that fent is a great painkiller so is OC may I also suggest hydromorphone as it is probably the most euphoric opiate out there. Many chronic pain patients I know swear by it for breakthrough pain as it hits quick and has a short halflife so your not to blasted for long periods of time.

Opiofile,

First let me say that I am sorry for your condition, I have great empathy for you. Second, I too have chronic pain and have been on methadone for nearly 12 years. My PC doctor has been prescribing it and plain oxycodone (she had to pull me off of all NSAIDs about a year ago - bad liver numbers) for about 6 years now. When I bugged her enough that the 'done dosage, which hasn't changed in all that time, was not doing it, she sent me to a pain doc to see about adjusting it. He immediately wanted to take me off 'done, so I have been researching what to go to. Your doctor used the most conservative method because she probably read/heard about the dangers of a methadone switch: it tends to overdose you on new med. I have seen equivalencies of up to 13:1 ('done : other opioid).

You might ask her to look at levorphanol which is very long acting, like methadone, also is SNRI like in that it blocks serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. It also has a very low cross tolerance from other opiates and builds tolerance more slowly than most. I have no idea how much it costs but it is on my insurance's formulary.

Yes, and actually The University of Chicago Medical Center was going to at least take a look at my case, but my insurance company was already tipped off to my narcotic use of course so they wouldn't cover anything. Not only was it my hospital at first, it was the insurance company in the beginning as well.

i'm glad to hear you got your dosage and meds sorted out Opiofile and i'm very sorry to hear that you need the meds due to being terminally ill. I hope everything is as comfortable now as it can be and still do the things you want to do.
i take a lot of pain meds due to lower back disk and sacro-iliac damage. I'm currently on 160mg oxycontin twice a day (sometimes more) and 40mg oxynorm (the UKs immed. release oxy) when needed. I've been taking oxy for over a year now and currently waiting on my appointment with my pain clinic consultant next month about trying stronger meds (my doctor mentioned Fentanyl but wouldn't prescribe until I had seen my PC consultant) and some other treatment. I know the pain is nothing compared to what you are going through, but being in alot of pain and not having the appropriate relief isn't nice. Luckily too, my doctor is good when it comes to pain management with meds.
i hope your okay and wish you all the best, take care

I'm deeply troubled by this, so legitimate narcotic use disqualifies you for a transplant? I was under the impression that narcotic ABUSE disqualifies one from a transplant, for example, alcoholics can't get a liver transplant.

I mean dude, if you don't actually have a problem with using opioids - as in not abusing them or having any of that abuse reported, then you should be eligible. I don't understand, that's ridiculous. You deserve to grow old and die, 23 is just too young man.
:(

yea, to be honest, I always have preffered prescription opiates like oxy, fent, morphine, dilaudid, etc....to street drugs like heroin.

The feeling of knowing for a fact what your taking and the exact dose it is and exactly what inactive chemicals are in it makes me feel much better about it. Especially since there are such strict laws regulating the production of prescription drugs. Your never gonna find a cockroach leg or baby powder mixed in with your pharmaceuticals.

Of course, I would need it in the correct dose levels.

Obviously I would rather have a gram of good quality heroin over a few 7.5/500's. Am I right?

Damn right my fellow BLighter!!

If it's bad, you can go to the ER. Tell them you're wihdrawling from Methadone and they have to give you Methadone. It's protocol. That might work for right now.

This is absolutely false.

Not only do they not "have" to give you methadone, but they most likely wont give you NOTHING at all.

Ill share a little story with yall....

I am pregnant and on methadone for PM....I been on it for over a year...earlier in my pregnancy some screwup happened with my script refill. I needed it on a certain day, and did everything i was suppose to , in order to get it filled that day. but they messed it up and didnt have it ready for me that day, and it was a friday, so i woulda had to wait til monday.

I told them that Im fuckin pregnant and they cant just screw me over like this--they have to give me the meds, my baby could die if i go into severe WD's over the weekend, but they didnt give a shit and was givin me the runaround.

So here i was tryna figure out WTF to do, and callin up all the local ER's near me. (One of them had gave my BF methadone when he got sick and had to get admitted to the hospital on short notice and couldnt get his dose from the clinic, so they took care of him since he had been admitted for a stomach condition, I figured theyd be sympathetic.) And of course i had heard it so many times from people here "The ER has to give you meds if you in wd's, etc...."

Well, it aint true. NOBODY that I called said they could give me methadone, or anything at all. They basically said, too bad. I explained that not only would i be in WD but i am pregnant and my babys life would be at risk, and they said there was nothin they could do.

Shit ended up workin out with the dr's office and they got the dr in and wrote me the script at the 11th hour, but that was the scare of my fuckin life.

the moral of the story is, dont be so sure that the ER is your sure bet in case of your last resort. :| If they wouldnt even treat a pregnant woman who absolutely NEEDS her dose more than just about anybody, i dont know how likely they are to give it out to anybody who comes in and says "im on methadone and im in wd".

Just somethin to think about.

^^^
Truth ER doctors hate drugies especially junkies as we tend to show up faking pain in order to get meds. Its a sad fact but I have heard ER doctors talk in the other room after I ODed on methadone they were talking about giving me active charcoal 20 hours after I dosed in order to "teach me a lesson" yea I dumper that shit down the sink.

Opiofile89, i have had multiple cancers and statistically will not live long. i thought/think i have it bad. but you have really been through hell. i wish you all the best.

You didn't get screwed you have a doctor that doesn't think someone your age should be on that much pain medication. It's not a conspiracy. And if you switched doctors it'd pretty standard for a new doctor to start you out at the lowest dose. She is protecting her liscence. Either call her and explain and be 100% honest or go in there and explain and be 100% honest. What is your condition?

You are a complete fucking moron!!! How dare you make an assumption like you did about the OP without even asking about his predicament first. If you had, you would realize he is COMPLETELY entitled to receiving adequate pain relief, as he is terminal and likely will not be alive much longer. You are truly a sick fucking human being Memphis, and I hope you experience tragic pain like the OP, only to be denied the proper treatment. Then it will be you who is crying, and guess what? I will be fucking laughing at your stupid piece of shit ass. It should be pieces of shit like you dying and not the OP. Get the fuck off this board you fucking asshole who lacks compassion. The world will be a better place without you.
