What to do with my hands

Join Toastmasters. You will get a lot of practice and safe feedback about public speaking, which will include getting you used to what to do with your hands. That will carry over into all areas of your life.

This is a huge problem for many people... If you've never experienced this, lucky for you.

I think confidence is the key here... If you are confident (like Adderall will make you), you're going to be on top of your entire persona. While not on any drug and feeing anxious, it will show. It's all about your state of mind... when you are nervously checking the phone, it is a relief, but a short-lived one. Mental strengthening is what is required IMO. Smoke less weed if you smoke regularly, it can destroy confidence and leave you an anxious wreck.

A certain amount of this feeling is natural, letting it control you is a problem however. The post above me about practicing public speaking techniques is really good advice IMO.

I was just fretting about this the other day..

I have my hands down by my sides, but then start thinking that they look too "straight" or don't know what to do with my hands. So I cross my arms. But then I think that I must look awkward, with my arms crossed in a weird fashion. Or maybe I look like I'm not a very open person (body language). So I grab my phone and fiddle with it, or light a smoke.. but then, eventually, there's nothing to do with the phone, or I finish the cigarette. So in the pockets they go. But then I worry that having my hands in my pockets looks sketch, or that I look fat because it makes my jacket poof out a bit at the stomach. So I put them down by my sides...

Lol. It's definitely a confidence issue. I'm sure no one really gives a shit what my arms/hands look like. Try relaxing in public, maybe by focusing on other things going on, or by breathing calmly. If you're waiting somewhere where there are seats, sit down and place your hands in your lap so they don't feel like they're just hanging there uselessly.

Even better.. instead of walking, ride a bike around! Your hands will be chillin on the handles, you'll look like a badass, and you'll get around places faster. Like a boss. %)

Then I realized that no one really gives a damn what you're doing with your hands so it really doesn't matter. Just walk how you want to walk--Who cares if it looks funny to someone else? Are you ever going to see that somebody again? Those who think it's funny don't matter in the long run.

It is for this reason that a couple of years ago I decided I would walk however I felt like it. Subsequently, I do silly walks everywhere now. I step in time to my music. I play air-drums. If I'm excited, I'll jump or do a spin.

If I'm happy, I walk happy. If I'm sad, I walk sad.

And consequently, my hands are kept busy.

I don't really pay attention to what my hands are doing. I think sometimes I dance around. Or I'll step only on the cracks, or hop, skip, whatever. I do what feels right at the moment.
I do play with my phone while walking if I see someone on the same sidewalk. That way I'm "busy with my phone" and don't have to say more than "hi" to them. People here tend to be pretty friendly. If I'm walking I want to get from point A to point B asap and stopping to chat about the weather doesn't get you there.
