I was 17, in the IDF (Israeli military) in Lebanon, was in a fire fight and bullet fragments from a ricocheting round entered under my chin and wrecked both jaw bones before settling in my sinsuses. I was given morphine for almost 3 months, including my time back in Lebanon after recuperation. When my prescription was pulled I got sick. We were given 2 syrettes (small syrines loaded with 20 mg morphine sulphate) as part of out gear. We also got cigarettes and a kind of phone credit card. I didn't smoke and didn't care for the phone even if there was somehow a payphone in Lebanon that would call home. Therefore I traded those things for syrettes I couldn't scrounge off mates.
At the time Lebanon was a major producer of heroin but being young I didn't realise that it was basically the same as morphine so didn't go near it. When the syrettes dried up I was sick like a dog, got marked for Dysentery and was given paregoric which helped me off of the harder morphine.
About 2 months after I cleaned up I took shrapnel from an mortar round and voila, back on the carousel. This time I used the local heroin when my morphine dried up. During training for a promotion in officers College when I was 20 they discovered that I was addicted. I was only 1 of many with the "Soldier's Disease" and so they gave me a choice, cashier out or else get on methadone. After 1 week they would give me 4 weeks of Diskettes at a time and so since then (I am 44 now) I have been on methadone, or when in the Philippines as I am now, morphine though every once in a while I treat myself to a drug holiday as it were, heroin or OTC opiates/opioids.
