what separates the animals from you?

^true
Prarie dogs and Meercats are the most social animal on the planet, with communities (and cities) that span hundreds of kilometres.

Animals don't do things with malicious intent.
They don't kill one another for anything besides survival instinct--unlike humans who kill each other over petty things like jealousy or money.
Animals don't rape or molest each other.
They don't start wars over anything not related to survival, like oil or material profit or green scraps of paper or imaginary lines drawn in the sand.
I believe animals lack the human emotions of hatred, greed, lust, jealousy, etc.

Animals are more humane than humans.

I watched a documentary before(think it was horizon) and it covered this topic, I think the main difference between us and animals is that we can walk on two legs, they can't.

for one, i dont think animals can hate. people do it a lot though.
Have you ever had a dog? The subjective feeling of hatred has probably been useful to territorial animals

I have.
Are they doing it because they think poop is gross, though? Animals seem to have no concept of 'grossness'

Ha good point, didn't think of that....I must be wrong then.*blames the documentary*

Edit- This was in reply to the chickens comment. Didn't know we were on page 2.

^:) They probably meant mammals.

Cats can be spiteful little shits.

Nah, both dogs and cats for instance can be very picky when it comes to food and taste.

If animals had the same level of reasoning as us (hey we're animals too) they would have developed some form of complex culture, attempted to communicate with other species, or invented more complex tools.

- ok, "complex" is relative, but you dont have to look hard to find these cultures among for ex. elephants and dolphins.

social technology- including symbols, schemas, long term autobiographical self, and spiritual materials such as this computer

-social technology.. cant think of any that would have other purposes other than to aid practical things but there are symbolic things apes use to show theire superior status within their group. and your computer could easily be compared to sticks and shit they use.

Sure, our emotional impulses usualy get the better of us and we start screaming like chimpanzees, but one thing chimps cant do is behave like a gentleman at a classy ball.

-being attractive is way important in animal world, thou they dont use a suit, being big and having certain attributes such as colors and fancy manouvers make breeding easier hence is quite important. and our sexdrive is acctually just a result of our species drive to breed.

We show soooo much more emotion than any other animal, we can decifer things alien, understand things natural and freely give this wisdom to others.

- there is no way of knowing what acctually goes on inside the brain of animals, we can se their acts but not their feelings. people still argue over wether flyes and ants feel pain. and conserning their giving this thoughts and feelings to others: im convinced mothers pass on important knowledge to their breed. also apes obviously can decipher symbols and icons when being trained for a while. in sweden there are a few orangutanges (i think) in zoo´s that paints, having favourite colours and even see meanings beyond dif. paintings they are showed.

We setup advanced methods of swapping goods and services. We can split something dead in half in reason of fairness. We have the greatest examples of kindness, generousity, beautiful artwork and the highest love. We have the worst examples of greed, desire for power, homicidal tendancies

- "advanced" methods of swapping goods and services: also relative. of course you use less advanced methods if you have a lower intellectual capacity but the important thing is wether you Have a way of swapping goods and services, which they obviously do. same goes with spliting food in half in reason of fairness and love, check out elephants and a few other non-predators. they share food and leave their dying friends at special burialgrounds.

nah sorry, u are all wrong... the difference between animals and humans is that humans are insane, whereas animals truly follow their nature.

-insane as in pretty much every type of dog that has been bread by humans? non of them show natural behavoir. though thats our fault.. :(

Animals don't do things with malicious intent. They don't kill one another for anything besides survival instinct--unlike humans who kill each other over petty things like jealousy or money. Animals don't rape or molest each other.

-birds fuck around with cats, dogs and anything that cant fly cause they get a bang out of it. polarbears kill pretty much everything without eating it or anything (therefore being called most dangerous animal), and dolphines have been observed performing gangrapes. (!)

or kangaroos

edit: in response to the "no mammals can walk on 2 legs"

koala's eat euceliptis leaves to get high, so they do drugs.

and domesticated animals are a product of human insanity. a human should want to ride a horse, or hunt a lion... these things should be instinctively feared. dogs and cats make no sence, humans should socialise within their own kind.

of course, this insanity has proved extremely useful to those that have observed it in a rational state of mind.

You guys should watch more Animal Planet and all those awesome animal specials on the Discovery channel and National Geographic. One cannot speak in absolutes for ALL species of animals/insect/etc...you'd be goddamn surprised.

You've never seen a cat or dog kill a bird or mouse and play with it?

Of course you could argue that it's because of its instincts but then anything could be excused.

Animals don't rape or molest each other.
I think many of the matings done by animals would be defined as rape if they were humans. Mallard ducks actually rape female ducks in groups, chasing and pecking her until she weakens and then take turns mating with her.

They don't start wars over anything not related to survival, like oil or material profit or green scraps of paper or imaginary lines drawn in the sand.
They can't start wars...

hahaha, i was just about to post a similar reply.

animals don't sit in their air conditioned houses drinking beer and reading a forum topic on the internet.

i think that humans and animals are in two different groups. not that we are superior or better, just in different groups. there's something one of us has that the other doesn't.

>>Written communication is one that jumps out at me.>>

Most humans (looking over our specie's entire history) lack this.
