not sure if this has been done before... but yeah, so what kinda music do u write to, if any.

i assume we all have certain genres of music we enjoy, but only some of them set the mood for writing, a soundtrack to our pens.

myself, i listen to progressive house most of the time, which are not the most conducive music because of their beats and pace. though if inspiration strikes, the words come regardless of the music in the background.

if i was after a mood, i'd probably listen to something slower though i have no preference, anything from sigur ros, mum, to beth orton, k and d, plastikman... was just listening to autechre last night as i was working on something.

does music influence your piece, or does it simply set the ambience for something u're after?

let's keep this thread bumped :)

it changes for me.

sometimes I'll be listening to something floaty like instrumental post-rock, or some deep house mix I have.

Other times, when I can't hold the words back, I'll have something heavier like deftones or a hard acid/techno mix.

but sometimes it's the simple songs that fall through the cracks that don't get a lot of rotation on my cd player/winamp that can do a lot for me.

At the moment i'm listening to' A Perfect Circle's ' new album the thirteenth step, all the time!!
It's been in the background whilst writing all of my recent stuff, and I think Maynard James keenan is an absolute genius in his lyrics, that i could never get anywhere close too!!!
He's also got one of the best voices to go!!

I don't know really...The music I listen to goes very much with my mood, and the stuff i write obviously goes very much to my mood.
I mean I listen to 'Amen', when i'm angry, punk rock if i'm feeling politically minded, 'Cold' if i'm sad, 'the smashing pumpkins if i'm tired and want to unwind....I'm sure some of it must influence it to a certain degree, but it's mostly just for ambience, to enhance the mood i'm feeling I suppose!!

That CD is at the top of my "CDs I Want for Christmas" list. 'Cause Twiggy joined the band of course. haha.

Anyway, as far as what I listen to when I write it depends on what I'm writing. What mood I'm portraying. The music I listen to affects what I write drastically. If I'm writing something dark and mysterious, I try to listen to dark and mysterious music, etc etc. You get the picture. But lately I've been pretty much hung up on either Marilyn Manson or David Bowie.

^^
Yes, it does kick ass!!! Takes a few listens to get used to, but then I was hooked just like with 'mer der noms'!!
Twiggy and James Iha seemed to be very good additions!!

It's a must own album!!

Edit*
Oh yeah!! Forgot to mention The manics!! Very inspirational!!

Haven't done bucoup writing lately, but I just created a Bluelight post to Warren G's "Regulate."
Does this count?

depends on the mood. some of my favs: portishead, orb, ani di franco (sometime too many of her words get into my poems though), anything slightly classical with a trip hop feel behind it. esthero, everything but the girl. even some hip-hop helps me get my flow down... certain songs mainly.:)

I'm actually the opposite, I find music too distracting when I'm writing - I have enough variation in my thoughts without music being put into the mix ;)

I will say though, that music does play a huge part in inspiring me to write and my inspiration comes from gothic and doom metal - ie, Macbeth, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Opeth, Within Temptation etc etc.

I would say the inspiration for my music comes from hip hop, i know not many of you guys are into that stuff, but thats what i find easiest to write to, the words just come to me when the music starts...

I listen to a random mix of music. I do find that sometimes a sobng dosen't fit the mood and build a play list only of the songs I think will fit, alot of time I also find music a little distracting
