What MDMA-like drug did my friends consume?

My friends bought a gram of very brown, almost black, 'MDMA' last night. They each took 500mg each this morning (spaced out into two doses) and had a good time, but only for 3-4 hours. After that, they rapidly came-down. Apparently, it was the most intense but also rushiest MDMA they've ever had. They're suspecting it wasn't really MDMA. Are there any MDMA-like drugs that don't last as long, are more 'energetic' and are very dark in colour (if any)?
 
Are you sure they haven't been taking something else all along and now they are experience real MDMA for the first time? I have never had real MDMA last more than 4 hours. Sure there are some slight after effects but i don't really count that. MDA on the other hand usually lasts 5-7 hours for me.

Then again, 250 mg followed by another 250 mg sounds like an absolutely insane dose.

I suppose that's possible. The dealers they bought from varied though, so it seems unlikely.

They weren't capable of coherent speech at their peak due to their jaws, so it was quite a large dose.

How often do they dose like that and how often do they roll?
 
Please read the rules. They could have taken anything. Unless you use a test kit, no one has any idea what you consumed. There are some very nasty chemicals sold as MDMA these days. Without a marquis or mecke test kit no one can accurately tell you what they took.

Test kits are cheap and could save your life. You can find them at dancesafe.org or ebay.
 
Indeed substance ID or "what did I take"-threads are not allowed here. I will however comment on the duration.

I've had real tested MDMA last anywhere from 2.5h to 5h. What I've found is that smaller doses (120-140mg) tend to produce calm but long rolls that come up and die down gradually while big doses (+200mg) tend to produce much more intense but also shorter rolls that come up and die down very abruptly. I suspect this has to do with the rate at which your serotonin reserves are depleted. 4h however is about the average length of an MDMA roll I think. If they have always rolled much much longer (as in 6+ hours or something) they probably didn't get real MDMA before this time indeed. Or they redosed way way too often and even then I don't think you would reach 6+ hours consistently

Color, texture, smell, consistency,... all tell you nothing about the quality of MDMA or even about what substance it really is. Buy a testkit before you run into some dirty RC or something even more harmful
