what is the point of an ice catch?

It's just to cool the smoke and make for a more enjoyable smoking experience.

(well, that's the point of putting ice in the bong. The point of ice notches/catch is so that you can't drop an icecube down the neck of your bong and through the bottom)

cools down the smoke. when smoke is cooled (like any substance) it condenses so you can fit more smoke in your lungs because the smoke is thicker. it doesn't remove anything but it's better for your throat and lungs because you're not putting hot smoke into you.

Cooling down the smoke IS doing something healthwise.
A large part of the damage smoke does to your throat and lungs is due to the heat.

i hate my ice perc... i PREFER warm water or actually hot water... it gives a steam effect and i find that ice chilled air tends to be very HARSH.

the only time i'll use ice is if i have my vape attached to the perc which is a rare occasion...

another thing i'll do instead of ice is i'll allow the bottom of the glass to sit in a sink of ice (water is cold but no ice IN the bong)...

for me... ice is negative. but with a double perc, 2 diffusors, and a water ash catcher i dont feel the need for any ice in that thing. besides if you put ice in it and you have hard water... WATER SPOTS... makes your glass look shitty.

It just cools the smoke more than just cold water does.

I've never put ice into a glass bong but with the oldschool plastic bongs I'd put ice in those or put water in them and put it into the freezer until it was a mixture of ice and water and then smoke out of it.
