Forgive me if this is in the wrong place or a stupid question...or both!

Sibutramine Hydrochloride Monohydrate (branded as Reductil, Slimex etc) and now banned in the UK due to various reported problems...just need to know the significance of the 'monohydrate' part...would it make any difference if I was to aquire Sibutramine Hydrochloride and use that in the same dose?

The term "hydrate" usually refers to a substance that contains H20 (water) bound within the crystalline lattice associated with the compound. Therefore, a monohydrate salt would contain H2O at a 1:1 molar ratio. The formula would look something like SibHCL*(1 H20).

In other words, once the chemical is dissolved in your body (by water) it is converted to the same thing, hydrate or not. However, in terms of dosage, the non-hydrate counterpart would be slightly more potent per gram of powder. This would probably be an insignificant difference, because water is a light molecule relative to most organic compounds.

If you are interested in calculating the quantitative difference, get the mass % of water (molar mass H20[approx 18g/mol]/molar mass SibHCL), convert this to a decimal (i.e. 50%=0.50), multiply decimal by the total weight of substance, and finally, subtract this value from total weight.
