what is the best college football conference?

I believe I made the earlier comment about OU being TX's bitch, so let me come back to this a bit.

Well.......one could certainly argue that without Texas (as a state) OU would be nothing, the majority of thier football recruits and students are from Texas, OU is what it is b/c Tx is its next door neighboor, so Texas' Bitch could mean many things, js.

Yes, it could mean many things - our context is primarily football, but it could mean many things.

However, once again you are writing things you actually don't know anything about. As of 2006 22% of the students at OU came from Texas. 39 of our 98 man roster are from Texas. Do you know what a majority is? Get your facts straight before you once again make yourself look stupid.

Other proof OU is not Texas' bitch when it comes to the playing field.

-Oklahoma is first all time for the most weeks ranked #1 in the AP Poll with 97 weeks.
-Post-WWII, Oklahoma has the most wins with 535, and the highest winning percentage with .761 in the country
-Oklahoma holds the NCAA record for most 11 win seasons with 18
-Most weeks ranked #1 in the BCS with 19 weeks
-Oklahoma holds the NCAA record for most consecutive victories with 47.
-Oklahoma has won 3 straight Big 12 Championships in the years 2006–2008 for a total of six.(from a total of 14 championship games)
-Oklahoma has the most points scored in the history of NCAA football with 30,474 through the 2008 regular season.
-Oklahoma has 7 national championships

Thanks for the definition on the word 'majority'. I'd agree HoL overstated it.....but I suppose nobody from OU has ever embellished or exaggerated anything? Certainly not anything related to football. 8)

Nice stats. Post WWII? Selective much ;) LOL. Nevermind, I see where you got your stats. Care to offer up any similar stats for TX for comparison? You seem to have pretty quick access to such Big12 numbers, and it would prove your point better to show the gap between OU and TX......or would it? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm simply unaware of TX's comparable stats....nevermind, knowing where you built your statement, here's TX's equivalent.

I believe most of those 'Conference Records' involve OU, no? And for your chest pounding on rankings and season wins....I would say it is tough to argue one team over the other, at least for me.

Coming back to my initial statement of OU being TX's bitch....let me put it to you this way. Who holds the Big12 together? Who was the linchpin in that decision, and who hols the majority of the cards at that poker table? TX. IF TX were to have left the Big12 it would either have folded or been immensley weakened. However, if aTM or OU were to leave and TX remained, the conference would have taken a much less substantial hit. A hit, yes, but not of the same impact. Also, your stats are going back how far?? Remember, most of the people you're talking with here only have awareness going back 10-15 yrs at most; very few can recall the days of Barry Switzer and Barry Sanders, the days of OU-OSU being the Big8 game to watch and wondering "TX who?"

Yes, I'll go along with OU 7NC > TX 4NC, and OU 42ConfChamps > TX 32ConfChamps (does anyone else win that conference....or is it the story everyone holds about USCw and the 9 dwarves?). Hell, checking stats, it appears "all time" winning percentages both schools are http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/football_records/DI/2008/FBS%20compiled.pdf]damn near equal, same if we just look at the 2000s, and in both cases OU has the slightest of edges. But in the national spotlight, what is the common current impression? OU blows it, TX wins it or at least makes a game of it.

Stat wise, you can make your argument, and depending on who is listening and how much they are willing to swallow without questioning, you can win them over that OU > TX. But I really don't think it's feasible to argue that OU=B12 nearly as much as TX=B12 to the football nation, and that what TX says is what happens in relation to that conference...OU included. While I'd go along with OU and aTM being higher in the B12 pecking order, there is a noticeable perceived gap between them and TX at the top, and then a much huger gap between those three and the rest of the conference - in terms of power. Stats (wins, records, ... 'facts'..., etc) be damned, regardless of the argument the 'facts' present, the belief and continued statement nationally is that TX > OU*.

*I have to concede, part of this fact checking has shown me that over the past 10 yrs OU is 6-4 against TX (only 1-4 in the past 5 yrs, but 7-7-1 over the last 15)....so very recent history is on TX's side, feeding that impression, but the 'facts' don't support that impression. I will comment though, that while OU has won most of the conference championships in the past several years, their failure in BCS games also compounds the impression that TX > OU....'facts' be damned (ie, who got there to even play?).

I will have to say you have come a long way from calling OU Texas' bitch. I feel that is a drastic over statement. You can call aTm and TT Texas' bitches, but OU is far away from that. I'm glad I was able to change your opinion.

OU would do great in the SEC or PAC10 without Texas. I agree the RRR is a good rivalry, but OU could live without Texas as easy as Texas can live without Oklahoma.

I'm sorry..I guess subtlety slips past some of you. You are fucking retarded if you don't think the Gulf of Mexico is part of the Atlantic, go back to school and learn some geography.

just cuz the waters touch doesnt mean its part of the Atlantic, they differentiate: gulfs, seas, oceans, etc for a reason

Panda Bear: as far as small bodies of water like Bays i think one is splittin hairs but the different classifications are for a purpose, no?

However, once again you are writing things you actually don't know anything about.

sounds kinda like you've been holdin a grudge against some of my other posts, perhaps, n just blew up?

are we really debating the classification systems of bodies of water in a college football thread? this truly proves that we will argue about anything in sports and gaming

we all know how much the Big 10 likes stagnation, I see the logo staying the same ;)

being serious, I am fairly excited about the Mizz and Nebraska additions. Nebraska has gotten only better the last couple of years, and with their defensive-minded style of play they should fit right into the Big 10 style of play. I am just very happy that Ndamakung Suh already left.

how shitty is the Big 12 North going to be now that Nebraska has left? that side of the conference has always been a little bit lacking, IMO.

Mizz should be a great addition as well, with a welcome addition to the rivalry of Illinois-Mizz into the Big 10. it is going to be great having a more forward-thinking offense in the conference's ranks.

the only downside is that the entire reason to these conference realignments is... money. the college football purist in me wishes that at least the NCAA could put money on the back-burner (for once). leave that to the NFL - or start paying the damn college football players

No wai, maaannnnnnn. MY body of water is much better than YOUR body of water. All you got is a puny lake, with cheesy beyatches and no waves. SEC has the Gulf of Mexico - that's right, buddeh...internacional waters! Suck it. And on the flipside we have the Atlantic Ocean - killer waves, sharks to bite your yankee ass, and babes in bikinis....year muthafucken'round. Big10 waters are just wannabes, ridin' the NCAA's jock trying to stay up with the PAC-10 (surfers heaven) and the SEC. Hell, even the ACC and BigE are >> Big10, because at least they got waves. Ball shrinken, frigid nipple plinkin waves, but waves. Go to lake Erie again and tell us how awesome your 'day at the beach' was :D

For lack of a better place to put this (as much as I hate the off topic social threads in forums....why can't I find one in here?)...

All I can think is "Rub your head, pat your tummy...." =D

ROFL. the environmentalist in me deems it too soon to comment on the state of the Gulf of Mexico

we've all felt television's pervasive influence on college sports, since the 90s. not to be a conservative, but legendary Coach Woody Hayes predicted that once television gets its hold on college football - all will change. and he is proven right.

the biggest downside to Big 10 expansion is The Game (OSU VS Michigan). although recently deemed irreverent, there will be a time once The Game is important again. yet this will not be so because instead of being the last regular season game, the Big 10 will no doubt employ itself in a Conference Championship game - which could lead to the National Championship game.

so The Big Game (OSU VS Mich) is just a precursor to the Really Big Game (OSY VS no doubt Iowa or Illinois) which is just a precursor to the Really, Really Big Game (National Championship)

^^Yeah, well, the oil spill thing didn't fit my shtick :\

In other news, this thread is dead....I'll just keep putting in quarters until someone unplugs the dang thing or we reach opening kickoff for this fall.

Anyone see this news? Not related to any school in particular, just ... kinda, you know.... just another in a long string of similar reports (tongue-in-cheek here, because I know the same can be said of most schools, even mine):

Police don't see link in Turner shootings
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- An Ohio State football recruit was shot and wounded twice in two months, and authorities believe the cases are unrelated.

Jamel Turner, 18, was left in critical condition by a shooting early Saturday in Youngstown. A 17-year-old girl was killed in the shooting.

Police Capt. Rod Foley said Monday the case apparently was unrelated to a drive-by shooting on April 16, when Turner was wounded.

.....

In the April shooting, Turner was riding in a vehicle with two others on Interstate 680 in Youngstown when a dark car with tinted windows pulled alongside their vehicle and began shooting. Turner sustained a gunshot wound to the lower left ankle and another to the right hip.

...

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel issued a statement over the weekend saying that he was praying for Turner. The university's athletic offices didn't immediately return a message seeking comment Monday.

Now, on the serious side, I would hope for the kid's safety and that he recovers. But for the "Sporting" part of me filling in dead time ... I'm putting 1 and 1 and 1 together as tOSU and Youngstown* and Guns.... and I come up with "Anyone account for Maurice Clarett lately?"

*I can never be grateful enough for my time in Youngstown, as it helped me appreciate that there is a shithole on earth...and anywhere I go from there is not so bad.

Youngstown... I'm not even going to type anything.

will the big ten finally change their name, or just fiddle with the negative space in their logo again?

they just came out with the new name....

Ohio State and the Eleven Dwarves ;)

I really hope the Big 10 doesn't change their name. It's been there name for such a long time.

But if they buckle under the pressure, I think the Great 12 would be a good name. It could be named that for the Great Lakes.

And Nebraska is a great fit for the Big 10. You have an instant rivalry there with Iowa. And it gives a great road trip opp for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa fans. Nebraska is one of the winningist programs in college football history. So it was definitely a great addition.

I think that Texas has the easiest road to a National Title with the New Big 12. all of their away games are a joke, and despite having a new QB (whom at least got some XP points in the last National Title).

^^ Just b/c they have a weak conference doesnt mean the team will stand-up

i hope dont get me wrong,

but i have my doubts

but really, with all these movin n shakin, im just excited to see what things are like

I still stand by my statement that the ACC will be the only conference to challenge the SEC and become a power conference in the near future. It would be a power conference right now if Miami and Florida State were at their usual dominance and with the way Georgia Tech and others in the conference have come along. The record in bowl games hurts, but it will not last.

On a side note, the ACC just got a massive TV contract with ESPN, using the SEC strategy that led them to dominance. More money = better coaches = more wins. The ACC is coming along.

And yeah I was wrong about the Big 10 last year. They were the better conference than the ACC last year. But to say that the ACC is last, behind even the PAC-10 and Big-East means you have been watching too much ESPN. It's a conference whose future is brighter than most, considering they draw from pretty much the same talent pool as the SEC.

Just to clear things up so I don't sound like any of these SEC fans who always root for their conference, I don't really care how the ACC does. Other than the Canes of course. I'm just calling it how I see it.

I don't see the ACC being contenders at all in the near future. Miami should be set for a couple years, but I see them getting demolished by OSU for two years straight. sorry, I like Canes Football and I am a fan of Jacory Harris, but if Wisconsin punked you last year I don't see anything too promising.

however, you never know with OSU in their first couple games or bowl games. so you have a shot :)

the ACC as a whole, I just don't see it man. Georgia Tech can run the gamut for the regular season, but once the bowls come around the teams prepare and beat them. I wish Florida State would return to their prominence, but I just don't see it happening. I am a fan of Jimbo Fisher, so I do hope that team well. I just don't see it.
