What is the "Acid Test"?

Some kind of banter that the Merry Pranksters who were a big part of the hippie movement came up with.

They had these massive warehouse parties with the Grateful Dead playing, where everybody took acid and all kings of strange happenings went on, i.e the acid tests.

I suggest you read the Elektric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe - I read it after somebody recommended it on here, and it's my favourite book. :)

Probably was a combination of seriousness and jest.

In minerology, various acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, etc) are used to determine the exact composition of a stone, commonly called an "acid test".

Also probably has some biblical reference to "trial by fire" or Job or Peter, or other life-changing metaphors like "buckling down" or "separating the Y from the X", due to the ability of a psychedelic trip to completely shatter one's life outlook. If you survive the test (and there's no way of knowing before you try) then you must have been of pure intent. Narcs and squares would dissolve back to dust in the presence of the blinding Truth.

EDIT: Just remembered the Chinacat myth about thumbprints ;) in which you would have to survive a 1mg+ LSD trip before acceptance into the "family"

The Merry Pranksters took a cross country trip in a psychedelic painted old school bus called "Further". They went from California, to NYC to go to the worlds fair, pretty much wacked out of their gords the whole way. Ken Kesey (more or less the leader of the pranksters) planned to make a movie out of it, and they shot footage the whole way.

After they got back from the trip, they would hold weekly parties showing the film at Kesey's house, and take psychs while watching. Each week, more and more people would show up as word spread, and eventually they started The Acid Tests. They would rent places, charge a nominal fee, and hand out lsd in kool aid. When this all got old, they had an Acid Test Graduation, where some people received certificates of completion.

Check out the movie Magic Trip, if you have netflix, it is streaming. It shows most of the footage, and all the wild things they did.

i think walking through the electric forest in rothbury on my first trip (300ug) was the hardest test i could ever imagine on acid.
