The shooting in Arizona and a viral video featuring Miley Cyrus have sparked curiosity about psychedelic drug.

The recent viral video footage of Miley Cyrus smoking salvia from a bong prompted several people to ask: what is salvia?

Alleged Arizona gunman Jared Lee Loughner also experimented with the drug, according to a high school friend.

Even so, most non-teenagers have probably never heard of this psychedelic plant.

It is, however, attracting increasing attention from legislators and law enforcement officials interested in possibly outlawing the hallucinogen.

The plant’s scientific name is Salvia divinorum and its active ingredient is called salvinorin A.

According to the February 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health Report, an estimated 1.8 million people aged 12 or older had tried salvia divinorum in their lifetime

There is no federal ban on salvia. As of October 2009, 14 states have begun regulating it. Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Virginia, Ohio, and Nebraska put salvia or salvinorin A on the list of schedule I drugs covered by state law. California, Louisiana, Maine, North Carolina, and Tennessee passed legislation restricting distribution of the plant.

The herb is native to Oaxaca, Mexico where it continues to be used by the Mazatec people during shamanistic rituals.

I never saw the fun in hallucinating.
Unless it's lucid, which I'm almost sure no drugs do(then again I NEVER read much about drugs that make you hallucinate or dissociate with your body). Then you could think you're fucking Carmen Electra and it'd be a pile of clothes or something.

I've never seen the crime in hallucinating but it scares the hell out of politicians since they keep fantically banning anything that might facilitate it.

Well to be fair you might think your car is a horse and think the people in the street are grass your horse is grazing on and you could be running everyone over. But that's not too likely.

I highly doubt anyone who has used salvia will think their car is a horse. I mean i've experienced being a rock but only for a few minutes. While salvia is working you cannot really do anything other than experience it. Salvia probably shouldn't be exploited by headshops, but those who want to try it should still be able to.

How is that fair? It's a retarded extrapolation. We're not even really talking about hallucinations, we're talking about visual distortions. Salvia can make for some really fucked up experiences. Salvia renders an intoxication so extreme that you can hardly move, much less coordinate something as complex as driving a car in an attempt to eat grass.

Haha you know how in some countries tobacco packaging comes with those gross pictures of lung cancer or rotting teeth or a child inhaling second hand smoke? Well I was just thinking if Salvia was regulated the same way and what pictures would be on it.
-Crazy aliens trying to kill you.
-Somebody stumbling face first into a glass sliding door.
-A guy strapped to a wheel in world of cogs and levers.
-An all powerful green female god beckoning you into her lair.
