I was reading recently about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that happened last year. Without going into the huge list of consequences and health effects that the spill has resulted in (which is a huge list by the way), I had a question regarding one that was listed, narcosisanaesthesiaia.

What is narcosisanaesthesiaia? It is listed as a major consequence of the oil spill (along with things such as CNS depression, respiratory depression, and death, of course) and sounds pretty serious. However I can find no information regarding what this actually is. The only place I can even find the word is in topics relating to the spill listing it as an effect.

So its an effect, but what is it exactly? Some sort of deep sleep (*-anaesthesiaia) or coma?

You'd think that someone, having taken 2 years of honors Latin such as myself, would be able to break down the word, but I honestly remember about 5% of my years of Latin education lol.

As I said, everyone is saying it is a problem as a result of the spill, but not saying what the problem is exactly.

Didn't know where to put this mods, so feel free to shove it whereva it fits best.

Sounds like a new or non-medically accepted word for narcosis, which is marked by a deep stupor or loss of consciousness from a chemical. The condition can be reversed if the animal (sea life affected by oil spill) is removed from the toxin, unless it reached a point of no return. Think of a bunch of crabs moving really slowly, not reacting quickly enough to catch food, etc.

Google only brings up a bunch of results on anti-capitalism/anti-oil/hippie sites and people referring to the oil spill, so my guess: a word made up by hippies to scare people.
