Now there is a drug I haven't seen / heard of in ages but one that was once a standard part of anaesthetic practice.
Chloral Hydrate fits into the hypnotic group of agents. It is well separated from Benzos, buspirone, propanediols, barbiturates and others. Chloral Hydrate simply fits into a group of chloral derivatives.
It is a short acting hypnotic which in its time was considered relatively safe for short term use in treating insomnia, particularly difficulty in falling asleep. But once the benzodiazepine drug development got going it was realised just how little margin of safety it had compared with benzos. It is rapidly effective and has a mean half life of 8 hours. Tolerance to the hypnotic action develops usually within 5 weeks. It has physical and psychological dependence potential and is not a satisfactory long-term treatment for insomnia.
It used to be used extensively in paediatric anaesthesia - so you could get close enough to the kids to get an IV in, and also used in the sedation of psychogeriatrics.
The exact mechanism of action I believe is still unknown - and given that it now seems to be a relic - I doubt if anyone will do any research on it for the above reasons. Like other general anaesthetic agents I suspect it may well have some action on GABA-A receptors or on membrane expansion ... but this is speculative only.
As for its chemical structure... I think you will find that it is formed by adding a molecule of water to the carbonyl group of chloral.
Given Chloral is 2,2,2-trichloro acetaldehyde, then chloral hydrate is: CCl3CH(OH)2 (if my memory serves me correctly).
Its metabolite is tri-chloroethanol: CCl3CH2OH which is also an effective hypnotic.
