What is a unit?

I'm reading a thread about extracting fentanyl from the patch and there is an instruction that says, "I chose 4ml because it is then easy to calculate the concentration of fentanyl easily draw out dosages. If using a 5mg pathich like I was then 10 units is close to 50mcg which makes dosing easy. So, the 10 units equals 50mcg......

In this case, what does the unit refer to? Is it the little lines on the syringe?

Thanks for your help. I have no plans to do IV but do have syringes, so, plan on using those for measuring purposes.

Yeah units are 1/100 ml. The little lines on the syringe.
