Just wondering what happens next in the US if the November proposition 19 gets a yes vote?

I don't know anything about the US legal/political system.

The Aussie dollar is good and I'd love a holiday to the states :)

not sure. the feds would definetly not be cool with this, and recently they blocked a majority of the main ideas behind the new arizona immigration laws. im somewhat expecting this to happen followed by a negotiation frenzy.

I think it will be a lot like how medical cannabis has been dealt with. Local jurisdictions will still decide on allowing or not allowing "dispensaries" or whatever they would call it if prop 19 passed, the feds would not approve of it but would not really be able to do anything about it, and the price of cannabis will drop significantly in California.

I predict that the feds won't directly touch it, however the renegade fascist organization known as DEA will attempt to bust larger grows. While immigration violated const. rights, cannabis is a bit different plus it will bring the CA $$$ through cannabis tourism.

If passed the bill will certainly be amended many, many times.

i also have a question about this....

i recently moved to humboldt and work as a trimmer for a grower... according to many growers up here and even in my business class im taking here, if the bill passes almost all the growers would stop because most the operations up here would be more gov. regulated and taxed? my teach was saying how humboldt brings in 500mill of revenue, im guessing untaxed cash mostly. With all the growers out of business that 500mill would vanish, all the shops would dissipate and and estimated population drop of half.

so vote no and keep it just medicinal....straight from the growers mouths i work with

^ The only reason they say that is because their product won't be worth as much. They are greedy IMO.

All the lazy ones. The true entrepreneurs will thrive under regulation.

I was going to write a page worth of why you're wrong, but Damien (thrusting out of the word-work) actually responded before me.

all is right now.

IMO - the bill prob will be amended before it is passed. If not this year, next.

Can a ballot initiative be ammended in California? Yes, it is my perception that the people against this bill are law eforcement agencies involved in drug interdiction, mexican cartels, the prison industry, med MJ growers, doc that write Rxs and growers and dispensaries and everybody else that profits off the currrent system. Its like the 20s all over again except this can stimulate the economy and provide needed tax dollars while driving the price down through competition and the blessings of free market capitalism.

To answer the aussie's question, our political system, on the federal level guarantees us of certain inalienable rights according to a little document called The Declaration of Independence that made us Citizens of a free Republic rather than subjects of a monarch, foremost among them being "life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness."

I actually read through the entire bill during class one night when I was bored, it seems pretty solid. It was only about 20 pages or so. Growers will loose revenue or their business if they insist on not getting a license and paying taxes but consumers will benefit greatly from regulation. It's the same as with alcohol. I would have much more peace of mind drinking liquor made in a licensed distillery that has been inspected and is on par with government regulations than something a guy made in his backyard. As for what will happen if prop 19 passes we wont know for sure until it happens (if it does). Other states my legalize it, or the government might crack down on California. People might go to court over whether or not it is actually constitutional for the federal government to prohibit the possession of cannabis, or if it's actually the state's right to regulate and prohibit drugs. There aren't very many reasons for people to vote no on the bill. Being an opportunist who profits off of the current illegality or pseudo legality while the majority of the population suffers under it, or being a bat shit insane prohibitionist that thinks smoking cannabis will make you shoot heroin and rape babies are the only ones I can think of.

And then came the DEA and Patriot Act.

alright for sure. thanks for both sides. i was just bring up what the growers up here were telling me. but your right they mostly are just greedy people and the true growers and entrepreneurs will thrive. Being a college student making good untaxed money working for these guys tho, i want them to stay in business so my vote will be no. Being greedy myself i guess but i feel bud is as legal as it needs to be, for medical reasons ;)

You do realize that if prop 19 were to pass, it would allow for a more opened discussion for other states to decrim or allow MMJ? In my state, you go to jail for having *any* amount on you. You're very narrow minded, eh? Believe it or not, for my pain clinic, I have to take a drug test that tests negative for everything except painkillers. How screwy is that? I can legally have pharmaceutical grade heroin in my system, but not cannabis. No, it's no where near as legal or accepted as it should be, and every bill that passes is a step toward more social education.

There are ways to make money and pay taxes... if you don't like paying taxes, move to...

oh wait....

Now I normally wouldn't say this on Bluelight, but fuck you. Fuck you so much. Until you have had your rights taken away and been in the system for an herb you might not understand. I understand you like the $$ and this might mean losing your job, but that is quite greedy (as you said) when you consider the big picture.

To residents of CA: How much of a drive is there from the religious nutjobs especially Mormons out there against this? I know they were instrumental in getting the gay marriage bill repealed

Actually, I've heard some positive things coming out of a few Christian camps, believe it or not. I'm unsure why.

I'll let another mod edit your post if they must because I'm slight perturbed by his comments like you are. :X :X

I hope it does; government will be able to legalize it and tax it. The price should go down as well.

Some people are voting against it who are already patients for medical weed clinics, argueing they dont want it to be taxed, but really it would help the economy so much that they really should vote for it. The price, as stated should go down. Please try and vote this!

Do you smoke weed? If you do, then consider how much cheaper it would be if it was legal. Also consider that the market will most likely grow if it's legalized, in which case there would be plenty of demand for people working. If anything, I think legalization will cause job growth, so I don't think you need to worry about your job.

Think of all the people living in cages for cannabis offenses all around the country and consider whether or not it's worth it to move towards legalization. Close to 1 million people are in jail for non-violent offenses involving cannabis (nationally). People's lives are destroyed over cannabis, and it doesn't have to be that way. You should be happy you live in the only state in which this is even a possibility right now.

The opposition, from what I can see, is mostly comprised of law enforcement and their associations. The opposition so far has been very weak. The proponents of 19 have occasionally set some fund raising goals to not only raise money but to help gauge support for the cause. The most recent was a call for a $50K "Money Bomb" in a 24 hour period. 1K for each of the 50 days leading up to the vote. They raise $61K in 24 hours. :)

The opposition is enjoying small contributions here and there from organizations like police officer associations and the alcohol lobby.

An easy way to keep up on all this is to set a Google Alert for "marijuana legalization".

According to The new addition of The San Diego Reader one of the biggest opponents to this are the Mexican DTOs. They stand to lose huge amounts of income. According to the article an oz of weed is forcasted to go from $375 to $38- thats pre taxed. I think they forecast 1.5 billion in revenue from excize taxes and 1 billion saving on reduced spending on law enforcement, prisons, ect... I believe in the pools, it is forecasted to pass by 5 points.

psssssst.... i'm pretty sure those inalienable rights you're referring to are grounded in the Constitution, not the Declaration of Independence. The DoI just got us away from England... it didn't say much about what freedoms and rights the colonies at war with England would afford its citizens.

just distinguishing the difference because i don't want other countries thinking they know our shit better than we do. ;)
