What exactly is a brain zap?

Sorry, I searched and couldn't find a good enough description. About a year ago a friend and I were baking out his car and my brain kinda twitched. It was after I used MDMA, but it wasn't directly after I used it. Maybe 2 or even 3 months after? That is the only time it's ever happened to me. I remember laughing hysterically (cause I was pretty baked). It felt kind of like a zap I guess. I read the term and got curious and was wondering if anyone could provide any insight?

Benzo addicts, or individuals who are dependent on it and then try and cold-turkey get them all the time, and the term "brain zap" is the best way to describe it...it literally feels like something "zapped" your brain/nerves...terribly uncomfortable and bit scary, as they can be a pre-curser to a seizure, especially when one abuses benzos...

yeah after abusing e this summer i got a couple of them, got one right after i finished smoking a bowl and it killed my high :/ and yeah literally feels like your brains getting zapped for me it was just like one certain part getting zapped but its always a different part :S

I too have experienced one of these 'brain zaps' and although I have consumed many drugs have first had one when I was about 16 and had only ever smoked. Ive only had about 3 since, and they are dam freaky!!!

brain zaps are most commonly associated with people that have epilepsy, but are known to be present in misuse (or even use) of multiple serotonergic drugs -- most notably being Effexor (the SSRI / SNRI antidepressant), various other SSRIs, MDMA, and others.

...are a few links with some extra information on the topic. We really don't know what they are, but we know exactly the kinds of activities that can lead to them and what they're related to.

One time I was streching by neck backwords slightly and it felt almost like a pop in the back of my head, followed by what felt like a rush of warm fluid in the area.

was that a brain zap?

After rolling, I actually get it pretty bad the next day. It seems to affect me when I am trying to fall asleep. It is pretty weird. It feels like your brain is buzzing really hard. Hard to describe the other feelings.

its like when you're falling asleep and get that zapp of power that wakes you up,

on an e related note of triggered brain zapps, had some dirty pills, a lot were consumed from friday to sunday

monday at work, i would be walking and its just like someone turned up the voltage on my brain, like exactly how it sounds zaaaaaaaaaapppp, you rec0over, its almost exactly like if whip its could give ya bad trip ~

i had to bail out of work that time ,. i lasted about 2 hours that day and was like fuck this and dipped out, went home and laid down in the dark , felt better, they reoccurred frequentky and lasted a few days ~ i was getting nervous

i had seizures before, brain zaps were never a prequel to any of them, before i pitched my fits, my foot or my hand starts twitching and then its lights off

it's similar to say... nerves just getting uncontrollably irritated for a second... like tiny spasms inside of your nervous system, tiny twitches, I have tourettes and brain zaps are different than tourettes twitching. it's like a signal is getting blocked and it makes your innards *buzz* for a moment.
