What does overdose actually mean???

Before being into drug misuse, I always assumed that overdose meant death, but is it just a term for taking so much that ill effects begin to appear??

In that case we've probably all overdosed on alcohol hundreds of times, in the form of being sick, blacking out etc.

If overdose means taking so much that effects become unpleasurable, then i suppose I must have Od'd on

Alcohol
Caffeine
Cocaine
LSD
Codeine
Dihydrocodeine
Ketamine
Mephedrone
Salvia Divinorum
LSA

and maybe more, shit that alot..

What do people think overdose actually means??

i have od on heroin multiple times. i just drop to the floor unconscious with the syringe still in my mainline . no way of telling how long i was out.

many die but somehow i survived and kicked the habit several times. been clean for years and years.

well done mate, (in a non-patronising way), ive only experience with alcohol, benzo and mephedrone addiction, kicked all apart from the benzos which im in the process of destroying. Trouble is im still completley in love with em.

But im digressing, hats off to ya m8 for staying clean, I consider people who can manage that as the most strong minded people on the planet.

I generally view overdose as the level of use in which your body and brain are in an abnormal level of danger due to use of the drug. So with opiates it would be the point at which your brain becomes moderately to severely oxygen deprived.

The term drug overdose (or simply overdose or OD) describes the ingestion or application of a drug or other substance in quantities that are excessive. An overdose is widely considered harmful and dangerous as it can result in death.

So basically, a drug overdose is taking too much, but overdose is generally only applied to drugs for which you can die from taking too much, not drugs like cannabis and many psychedelics.

^ Well it's pretty hard to overdose on psychadelics, but like xanax, I'm lots of us have completely blacked out, acted like a fool, and not remembered any of it. I would definately call that an overdose, even though it's damn near impossible to die from taking too much xanax.

EDIT: Actually once I made some cannabis brownies, and I overdosed... I ate a quarter of them, and for 2 hours I kept coming up, and then it just got too intense, even sickening. I vomited a few times, then I was fucked up for like 12 hours lol, completely gone.
