What does it mean when I hear...

Often times in Football, when a player is about to score, I often hear the tv announcer say "He's going for payder or pay dirt".

What the heck does payder (or pay dirt, can't quite understand what they're saying) mean?

pay dirt... it's like points are money. you do your job (score) you get paid (points).

it's being rewarded for success.
