Since I'm supposed to be studying at the moment, I decided it would be a great time to clean out my closet and then generate discussion about concepts and issues I grappled with while cleaning out said closet on an internet forum. :D

I was cleaning out the "old schoolwork" section of my closet. As I was cleaning it out, I was making a series of piles:

A pile of things to throw out (folders, notebooks)
A pile for paper to throw out (lecture notes, etc)
A pile for subject outlines (these are also paper)
A pile for marked work (assignments, tests, essays)
A pile for interesting articles that I might want to go back to and read (mostly from the 2 philosophy electives I took in first year, but also interesting studies I've come across while studying psychology)

I was going to keep the subject outlines for some reason, but I decided that there's not much point, so I'm going to throw them out.

I'm only keeping the things that seem interesting and marked work. I'm also keeping my old school photos and my diaries / planners from each year of university. I didn't use the diaries to write my feelings or thoughts, I mainly just wrote what I had to do each day. But I thought it would be cool to have them, so if anyone asked me "what were you doing on the 23rd of June, 2007, I can say "well I had statistic assignment 3 due and then I went out and got drunk for Tom's birthday".

How do you do this kinda thing? What do you keep?

i have (almost) everything saved. most of my papers i moved over from the old machine to this one from my philosophy degree, and a lot of the info that wasn't digital from my BFA i have in folders over there on the other side of my apt.

i threw some of it out, but i like hording stuff

Good topic. I like your thinking about the old planners.

I keep everything. Some of it (more recent stuff) is more organized than others, but I try to keep everything (bar a few textbooks, which I sold for money). Mostly it's paranoia, but it's either stored with me or in boxes in my mother's attack. I don't exactly know why I keep it, but I just wouldn't feel right trashing anything.

In the hypothetical situation where I did have to pick and choose, I'd do pretty much what you've said. Definately marked work, and articles/lecture notes with novelty. Stuff that I couldn't just as easily (and more quickly) find through google or Wiki.

So Rated E, what were you doing on the 18th of September, 2005 (This is a date of personal significance to me)?

I've only kept the diaries that I've been keeping since I started university.

Though I was in my final months of high school, so I was probably getting excited / anxious / nostalgic. :)

From high school I've kept most of my textbooks and notes/assignments from year 12.

From what I am studying atm which I just finished, I've kept everything. All my assignments are in folders on my computer and USB, and I have some hard copies of marked assignments that I've actually gotten back lol, and all my textbooks I have on my bookshelf in the study. I can't let those things go, I always think one day I know I will need them. (Maybe) :)

shit send me your old statistics work... I'm taking it right now! I throw most my shit away unless my younger friends can use it...

The only stuff I have saved is notes, tests, and textbooks for classes pertaining to my major (psychology). I don't keep stuff from my general ed.\elective classes because I don't feel like there is any point to.

I keep textbooks pertaining to my major as well (psychology).

But I also keep the textboks from my electives, as I generally chose my electives because I found them interesting (philosophy, sociology, history).

I mean, the chances that I will actually get those books out in a few years time and read them for fun is very slim. But ya never know. :)
