what do u read? (genre, favourite, current/just-finished)

Fantasy and sci fi usually push my buttons with other genres occasionally creeping their way into my box-o-books.
I am currently reading the final book in the Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson. At times he makes me want to throw the book out of a fast moving vehicle then detonate the small nucluer device attached to it, but I still keep on reading anyway 'cause it so goooood. Most people who have read Donaldson will understand why.
Other authors that I think rock are Robin Hobb, Terry Pratchett, Neal Stphenson, Margeret Weis, Lynn Flewelling.

some choice reading material there tars... i've been folowing the wheel of time series for waaaaaaaaay too long! im beginning to wonder if jordan has lost the plot... he seems to be writing fillers at the moment.
asimov's vision aod foresight is simply astounding if u were to read his other books before proceeding to the foundation series, especially the r. daneel series. having a background into the universe he created, the foundation sorta ties everything he's ever written together, it's just amazing... i only truly appreciated his passing away after finishing the foundation series.
another author u might wanna check out which is along the grand designs of asimov is gordon r dickson, the childe cycle... writing around the same time as asimov, dickson's series is less idealistic and more realistic military sci-fi with seperate stand alone storylines ultimately culminating in the evolution of man.
x004x actually the wheel of time is only up to the 9th book but considering how much material each book contains... it might as well be up to the 18th by any other series ;)
smigglepop the chronicles of thomas covenant the unbeliever was a good series... though i wouldnt recommend it to another 13 yr old ;)

currently reading some raymond chandler- 'farewell my lovely'. before that was 'catch 22', and next will be some charles bukowski- 'pulp'
all time top 5-
hitchhikers- the late douglas adams
only forward- michael marshall smith
on the road- jack kerouac
jimmy corrigan- f. c. ware
and dorothy parker poems. all of them.
 
If there's anything that goes on my top ten list of things to do, reading books have got to be up there somewhere.
Of note is Robin Hobb. This woman can grab you by the short and curlies and cause you to read and read and read her books until you pass out from lack of sleep. I attribute her Farseer trilogy to me failing the Ancient History HSC final exam.
A close second is Steven Donaldson. The Tomas Covenant series got me so depressed, I had to stop reading for a few days. I've started on The Gap series and its already pulled me in. Who needs sleep anyway?
Terry Pratchett also rockulates my world.
Some other various authors are: William Gibson, Clive Barker, Margret Weis (Dragonlance series) , R.A Salvatore (Dark Elf trilogy) and Neil Stevenson.
Right now, I'm going through 4 books at once, as is the fashion of my reading.
 
Try "How The Dead Live" by Will Self - the guy I got the book off of said it will mess with your head... I think he meant it depends on how messed up your head already is??? ;)

and Chung Kuo by David Wingrove totally rocks.. if you like sci fi you will NEVER find a series better than this - 8 books too, if you can get your hands on them.
 
Am completely hooked on Peter Carey just at present. He has written both the best short stories and novels of late for me; namely:
Fat man in History
True History of the Kelly Gang
Jack Maggs
Bliss
Must add Albert Camus: Les Etrangers (the outsiders)

I like reading books on history that I have no idea about.
Things like Nelsan Mandala, Ghandi and War History.
I just finished Malcom X.
I am just about to start a book called "The Other Side of the Hill"
It is about the German Generals point of view on the war and how many disagreed with what Hitler forced upon them.
I think it will be deep.
I also like Grisham and Steven King books.
I haven't read the Lord of the Rings series yet, so I will do that before I watch the movie.
 
for all the fans of Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion tells the story of the beginnings of middle earth from the start with the gods, right through to the Rings, very hard to concentrate on but well worth the effort
Also, the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King is by far my favourite, the first four books were great and looking forward to the last three that are going to be published in the next 2 years (",)

well i'm proud to say that i recently read a book, something i don't do much these days.
It was 'Survivor' by Chuck Palahnuik, the dude who wrote 'Fight Club' (also a great book, even if u'v seen the movie).
I love Palahnuik's style. He writes dark, funny, cynical, clever and rebellious modern fiction. He has a way of writing between the lines. Often his sentences are only half-sentences, resembling the scattered thoughts of his protagonist. And he takes elements of modern life and gives them a dark twist.
For example, the main character in Survivor sets up a phony Suicide Prevention helpline so he can tell people whether or not they should go on living depending on his mood. And then later in the story he sets up a huge garbage dump exclusively for used pornographic material.
And who could forget the bit in Fight Club where they make soap from liposuction fat and sell it to department stores.
Has anyone read Palahnuik's 'Choke'?

I love fantasy /science fiction but now and then a great fan of non-fiction
fav fiction at the moment =terry pratchett discworld series presently up to Wryd Sisters
fav non-fiction= No logo by Naomi Klein or the Lucifier Principle by Howard Bloom
 
lurve my books, specially sci fi, fantasy, modern fiction, tarot stuff, and psychological non fiction (read that: NOT self help books! Archetypes, Jung, dreams, neuroscientific research etc)
Reading Dan Simmons 'Hyperion' series at the moment which is awesome, read if you liked Julian May Galactic Milieu stuff. Sci fi, love, sex, incredibly clever use of time travel, it has it all, twists I never saw coming.
erm, I loved Harry Potter. by the end of Goblet of fire it was getting real dark and interesting. Looking forward to the fifth book.
I adore PTerry Pratchett, espcially anything with the guards in it. the new books are getting bettter and better. the only books I laugh out loud at.
I have the usual collection of Feist, Asimov, Zimmer Bradley, Eddings, Tolkien, May, M. Banks, Donaldson, Welsh, Adams etc. But I will read ANYTHING that's got an edge really, usually I borrow them these days.

Ive read 'Choke'. I thought that was mad, but Fight Club is still the best. Choke's good when the chick returns at the end. That made me laugh something severe. I was actually looking for my copy of Survivor today because I have a hole in my tooth and I know Survivor has a quick fix remedy in it... that book's good for stuff like that.
