I've been wondering this for quite some time. Anybody whose IV'd Morphine describes the "pins and needles" rush that I personally love. I do get a similar feeling from strong or good quality heroin but even then, it isn't the same.

What is it about Morphine (chemically, structurally, or pharmacologically) that causes this effect after crossing the BBB? I found the answers on other forums unsatisfying--many point to vasodilation or the histamine release. Heroin also causes a histamine release and vasodilation! As do many other opiates. Yet the pins and needles rush is strongly associated with morphine.

Any ideas?

I guess it has to do with morphines peripheral vasodilatation and histamine release. The first being the pins and needles effect and the latter the flushing of the skin and itching.

Heroin doesn't cause as much histamine release as morphine... Be satisfied with this answer because it is correct! :p

Ive done Morphine by pill form only & have never felt the pins & needles effect. Can you only get it threw the needle?

Ive IV'd morphine many time. Larger doses too from pharm vials~ and never experienced what i would call pins and needles. Maybe it just varies from person to person though.

Yeah it gotta be that, some people might be extra sensitive and others feel nothing.
Like me I believe I am extra sensitive to morphine and its histamine release but other drugs like heroin, oxycodone etc. is a walk in the park.

A lot of people take anti-histamines before shooting up to lessen the histamine release - it never worked well enough for me. :/
