I've been wondering this for quite some time. Anybody whose IV'd Morphine describes the "pins and needles" rush that I personally love. I do get a similar feeling from strong or good quality heroin but even then, it isn't the same.
What is it about Morphine (chemically, structurally, or pharmacologically) that causes this effect after crossing the BBB? I found the answers on other forums unsatisfying--many point to vasodilation or the histamine release. Heroin also causes a histamine release and vasodilation! As do many other opiates. Yet the pins and needles rush is strongly associated with morphine.
Any ideas?
