Is there an up-to-date pdf on what dentists can prescribe? I told my dentist about my opiate tolerance as he is a close friend and he said usually he dishes out Endone or Fortes, sometimes aweful Tramadol (but he reckons its bad, me too) He said he hasn't looked into it but I thought I'd do some of the leg work for him if I can. As he's a close friend he'd give me whatever I want. I was thinking Dilaudid solution-biggest bang for buck. It's 1mg of Hydromorphone per 1 ml and here comes the cracker.................it comes in 473ml bottles without any nasty other ingredients.

Anyways, this is for dry sockets after wisdom tooth extraction. As i have a tolerance the Endones ain't doing much (took 40mgs for pain relief)

Any insight, links etc welcome !!!! :)

Alternatively I think 30mg Oxycodone suppositories might also be available.

Lastly, a while ago I heard there is a difference between dentist. Some have lower qualifications or something and can only prescribe less. Is this true, are there 2 classifications of dentists or is this just the last dentist telling me this as he is also an opiophobe (got Fortes from that one a year ago for bad toothache)

The only thing you will get prescribed for a dry socket is irrigation of the site then alvogel. Most good dentists will treat the cause of the pain , not the symptoms. A dry socket while painful is easily treated and the pain goes within 5 hours. Panadiene forte would be the most commonly prescribed and for more severe pain it would be recommended to combine it with ibuprofen (nurofen). The only time you will get opioid prescribed is following trauma, broken or dislocated jaw, which would be normally cared for by an oral surgeon. The amount of hoops you would jump through makes it easier to get the hospital pharmacy to cover. Many years ago I could prescribe cocaine for severe throat cancer patients in the Uk but realistically that would sound alarm bells as soon as anyone tried.

I'll link you the dental prescribers list as soon as I get out of bed but personally I wouldnt risk my comfortable income prescribing drugs of dependence to any of my junkie mates.

Going to public hospital dentists, I've never been prescribed pain killers, not when I was clearly in pain after a botched root canal or nor when I asked for them due to an abscess on tooth which I think is also an obvious symptom of pain. They also have a sign saying they don't prescribe pretty much every pain killer on earth, including panadeine forte and tramadol. Ofcourse signs don't mean shit, you'll see the same signs at medical centres as well, I think they';re just there as an attempt to discourage dr shoppers. Dentist will tell you to see your Dr for pain killers, while Dr will tell you to go to a dentist if you suffer dental pain... cunts.

So that's all I have to add. I"m sure if you presented to a dental hopsital with a mouth full of smashed teeth due to a car accident it would be a different story, but it's been my experience for regular moderate to severe pain public dentists don't presribe shit other than antibiotics.

ur a dentist busty?

indeed, and quite a reputable one at that :)

Anyway I didn't even get panadeine forte when I had my wisdom teeth out :/ I think you're kidding yourself if you think a dentist is going to prescribe strong opiates just because you have a tolerance. As Busty said you'd most likely be in the hands of a maxillofacial surgeon before that happened.

I'll put it to the test.....he had a threesome with me and a girl so I think I have a chance at some Hydromorphone :)

You don't think it'd catch anyone's attention if he usually prescribes panadeine, oxycodone and tramadol, then gives you hydromorphone?

Given how most doctors are in this country, you should consider yourself lucky he's even willing to write you endone.

I'll quote my heavy Dihydrocodeine use as i had whooping cough as a reason for tolerance, and that Oxycodone makes me sick and queezy ;)

He can happily prescribe Endone or Oxynorm 10s anytime for pain. I actually do have chronic pain from an abscess and a bad gap between the upper molars that are constantly infected. There is actually a pain issue here and apparently it's non-treatable. If he takes out the back tooth, the gap will widen at the front and the same thing happens all over again.......

I wouldn't call me somebody who actively seeks to abuse drugs but do have a more heavy tolerance to opioids than the average person.

Once a dickhead poured 50mls of codeine linctus in my drink at a party thinking it'd be fun to knock me out. I thought I felt a bit warm and fuzzy but put it down to my imagination until his friend owned up.....man were they surprised it didn't knock me out. (200mg codeine...pheww lol)

See Busty's post and browse through the dental items. Pay attention to the authorities and required conditions. If you are getting it under Medicare then you will have to meet these criteria. If it's a private script, no problems there but I believe there are still some limitations on what dentists can prescribe in certain states.

I have a hard time in believing that a dentist would prescribe u anything more than endones. Sure u mite be friends with ur dentists (I have a few doctor friends too) but I think it would raise suspicion if u got that prescribed. I know a lot of docs are wary about prescribing abusable things even alprazolams etc. Im having severe pains from my wisdom tooth atm, my whole right side of my face is swallon not to mention my glands on the side of my neck, its so painful and can bearly swallow. Wish I could get rid of the pain too but doubt Id get anything more than forte's for it, Id rather do a CWE then , Its the same thing. I guess it depends on ur location too. Where I live its nearly impossible to get anything prescribed due to all the damn drug seekers. I see em all the time selling there prescriptions in front of the doctors :S

^ For some reason I think Endone is the limit for what dentists can prescribe, but I'm going off memory and not an information source. Where is Busty, he knows.

ETA: I shouldn't have said that last bit...

Having to go to the dentist when you've got an opiate tolerance is one of my worst fears. Had an anxiety attack in the chair last time I went :( I battled through it but I didn't get close to enough pain relief afterwards. Panadol and nurofen helped a lot more than expected. I've had a few other major injuries that just didn't compare to how awful dental stuff is for me.

If dentists can't prescribe certain amounts or types of painkillers can they write a referral type thing to get stronger stuff from another doctor? Pretty sure they could but not sure how common this would be.

^ I have no idea how common it would be, but if you discuss your opioid tolerance with the dentist that may be a step in the right direction. Perhaps say it's a natural tolerance, for the purposes of this discussion.

If you are using Nurofen or any other NSAID without being instructed to do so by your dentist, it may be a good idea to inform him you are using these analgesics as they have a small risk of increasing bleeding time after surgery/dental work.
