What authors do you feel really get it? Get you? Or perhaps invented a character that you relate to?

Stephen R. Donaldson (Thomas Covenant, Angus Thermopyle -- two characters I can relate to.)

Robert Heinlein - Come on! I so wish I could meet Lazarus Long.
 
Isaac Asimov's Foundation series first got me interested in cerebral sci fi. The rest of his writing are over polished turds. In fact any novel that would be impossible to turn into a movie are generally my scene.

When I was a kid I loved commando comics for their racial stereotyping

Now that's fucking funny, but in the wrongest way.

As far as Foundation series goes, I only read Foundation's Edge. Found it at a used book store when I was with my Mom for the summer, oh some twenty five years ago. It was excellent. I just never got around to reading the other novels.
