I guess my main point regarding schools is that no, it doesn't 'hurt' to go to a private school where the kids try harder... But, it's not as if kids at public schools don't have the same opportunity as private schools. Its' not as if the Board of Studies treat them differently, and it's not as if kids at public schools are in some way limited in their performance just because they're public.

Actually people *within* the public school system don't have the same opportunity - just look at selective vs non-selective schools!

^ I never said a thing about inequalities within the public education system... And, that's a flawed argument seeing as selective/non-selective refers to the quality of the candidature within the school, nothing else. Hard working, intelligent students can get the same results by attending a non-selective public school or a selective one.

The point that I am making is that when the BOS works out your marks, and the UAC your UAI, everyone is marked equally. The same scaling is applied to everyone across the entire state. No consideration is made for selective, government, private, non-selective or religious schooling. Hence the phrase "equal opportunity".

I got screwed over by the teachers in two of my best subjects in my final year of hish school. So I was really devistated to come out with a score of 88 (percentile) something. I expected to get a score of around 95 (which would have been the case if I took those two assignments out of the picture). I was so depressed it even carried over to my first year of Engineering, where I just had no love for it at all. I so wanted to do another course. It took a long, long time before I bothered to apply myself at Uni. I wish I did things differently, but I can't roll back the clock.

I hardly even use the stuff I've learned in high school or Uni these days, but would I have got where I am now if I dropped out after Year 9 ... obviously not.

apollo, the reason peple say that, is because most people attribute someone's UAI to there IQ, so stating how much work they put in for it, is a way of explaining if there iq is higher (they put in no work) or lower (if they put in heaps of work).

Good point dude :)

It's kinda sad that people feel like they have to justify their mark and intellectual capability that way, if you ask me :\

Ive recently changed my veiws of HSC, i finished 01 and now trying to get into UNI. Because of my low UAI and no tafe courses i pretty much have to do a "stat" test to try to get in, and even if my marks are good i think i will still struggle to get in b/c i'm just under the cut-off age for mature age. I'll find out in dec/jan. I've tried to get in anywhere in NSW that does teaching, as long as i can get in the system.
Although i wouldn't really change a thing in my life, *If* i could go back to yr 11/12 i would definetly have done a shitload more work, good old hindsight.
=)

yeah HSC year sucked for me.....I was goin thru a heap of shit in yr 12 and didn't feel like paying attention in class (except music and parts of english), didnt do homework, and didnt study in the lead up to the big one.....I came to my senses a little about 2 weeks berfore the start of the HSC, and that's all the study I did....I got just under 60, and I know if I had tried I could have got over 80-85.....luckily I had gone for an interview/portfolio viewing for uni early entrance before my results came out....so I still got into uni on the strength of my work....

Maths 2U was the killer....I got in the 0-20 percentile band....my Mom says she has never seen me as white as when I walked out of that exam.....I don't doubt her...

Also, HSC/VCE is really not THAT important....I mean, if you want to get into courses etc, sure you need it...but if you don't get into that course or whatever, will it really ruin your life? Is it that bad? You can go later, the uni ain't goin nowhere....I dunno, I just think there are much more important things in life than a score on a test....
