Dear Roger I found it hard to take your advice (and sadly ignored) to lay off the speed in my youth...even more so since the dawn of youtube when I go to listen to your music...I should have taken what you were on in this vid. =D

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Urban Spaceman

...and you had speed and everything you need (ed..aswell all the time-pah)

That was my fave song they made us sing regularly in music lessons at school. They apparently missed a few of the "subtle" references :D

"The Message"
(feat. Mary J. Blige, Rell)

[Dr. Dre]
This one is for my brother, Tyree, R.I.P.
.. [Mary J. Blige sings in the background] ..
A message to God
.. [Mary J. Blige sings in the background] ..

[Dr. Dre]
Since you finishin em early, what posessed you to start him?
We made a vow - later we'll regret til death do us part
Lord, I thought we was made for each other
You shouldn't connect those, made to be taken away from each other
Now what I'm supposed to do? I'm only half the man that I was
I'll never last, cause my better half is up there with you
You knew what you was doin when you made us; so with all due respect
you coulda forgave him, you didn't have to take him
He can take the game with him, cause he defines the word
The one who puts the G in it, who you think put me in it?
I'm feelin like my whole world is blinded - wonderin why
Cryin, pourin out my heart, pourin out liquor behind it
We fought like brothers, somethin we never should do
We coulda used time spent arguin tellin the truth
He had talent too - I had plans on watchin him grow
Don't know what hurts more - seein him leave, or watchin him go

[Mary J. Blige]
Listen listen listen.. (listen) whoahh (listen)
Listen listen listen.. (better listen) whoahh-oahhh-oahhh
Listen listen listen.. [harmonizing]
Listen.. mmm-mmm-mmm

[Rell + (Mary)]
If you wanna know why.. (why I live my life)
The way that I do.. (cause I got to get this money)
So don't worry about me.. (cause I know my way around)
I'm just hustlin everyday, runnin this race, makin this paper

[Dr. Dre]
Youse a soldier, you're probably packin heat up there
Met up with homies from the street, and got deep up there
If you only knew the way I felt before they ruined the crew
I thought I learned from Eazy, now I'm goin through it with you
We lost a thug, a son, and a father
I spoke to your son, the other day, and told him Uncle Dre got him
The Lord must be accidentally pulling your file
cause I'm still paging you, 911, straight in denial
Prayin you get it, but no man can choose the card he was dealt
You either quit, or you gon' play it like you get it
I done been through all emotions, from in shock, to keepin a poker face
to straight breakin down and showin all emotions
I'm anxious to believe in real G's don't cry
If that's the truth, then I'm realizin I ain't no gangsta
It's just not me, but you know I'ma always ride wit you
I miss you, sometimes I wish I just died wit you

[Mary J. Blige]
Listen listen listen.. (listen) whoahh (listen)
Listen listen listen.. whoahh-oahhh-oahhh
Listen listen listen.. [harmonizing]
Listen.. eyy-eyy-eyy-yeah-yeahh

[Rell + (Mary)]
If you wanna know why.. (why I live my life)
The way that I do.. (cause I got to get this money)
So don't worry about me.. (don't worry, don't worry worry)
I'm just hustlin everyday, runnin this race, makin this paper

[Mary J. Blige]
yeah, yeah, ahhh-oooh-oahahahhhhh.. listen..
mmmmmmmmmhmhmhmmmmmm..
if you don't know why I.. you gotta listen up right now
lis-ten, lis-ten, lis-ten, lis-ten..

never a queen fan but this track is so good
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgzGwKwLmgM - Queen Don't Sop Me Now

I fukkin loathe Queen with a passion beyond words. Including that track. However, there was a school my mate got sent to when expelled from the one we grew up together in that apparently had some knda Queen feitsh/gang shit going on. Supposedly "Bigger Boys" would quite literally force younger kids to get on their knees and kiss Queen LP, swear some kinda allegiance to Freddie Mercury and be able to quote extensive lyrics by heart in order to avoid getting a proper kicking if they couldn't. Thankfully, I never went to that school but one of me best buds did and - fortunately/unfortunately shared my loathing of the godawful excuse for 'music' Queen shat out.

Fortunately, for him certainly, it just so happened I'd picked up a couple Freddie Mercury solo albums along the way. Never listened to the fukkers obviously, but my auld man was a council bailiff so got to keep owt he wanted from evicted tenants and these were amongst 'em*. As such, I gave the shitey things to said mate to take in to school with him and he never got but a bit o' shit from then on in.

Always struck me as odd that there existed a school - complete with Bigger Boys Bully Buggers who chose Freddie Mercury and/or Queen - that manliest of all manchoonz - to assert true manhood... apparently when folk mentioned Fred's fave instrument was the pink trombone - specifically those attached to other people - shit got really ugly 8o

And whilst in schooldaze nostalgia mode. currently listening to some belting Pet Shop Boys (fave band throughout my adolescence) - including some stuff (first linky below being the legendary one) I'd heard whispers of but never expected to actually find...

Pet Shop Boys - The Bobby O Demos '84-'85 - legendary recordings never officially released afaik. Properly good 80s tunes predating the whole UK acid/house thing by a good few years.

Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental (demos and remixes) - after my time for PSB tracks... as if anybody would admit otherwise in the mid-90s despite the fact they pioneered the kinda sound so very many worship at the feet of ever since. Fukkin knew I was onto a winner even before me balls dropped let alone me first pills dropped.

Pet Shop Boys - Alternative - another I missed and have but very glad to have discovered. As with the above, I know quite a few of the individual tunes but have never heard 'em like this. Plus, acid-squelches a-go-go <3

(incidentally, it appears i still know virtually every lyric from every track of theirs i played on mildly variable loops for large parts of me yoofdom. last actual album of theirs i recall buying was the triple-vinyl retrospective one sometime in the mid-90s, genuinley had no idea they still made - and released - music together:o)

* as a slight aside, this was also how i acquired my very first ever albums wot i played the vinyl bare through obsessive obsession with - namely, Bowie's Space Oddity and... can't recall the "band" (presumably just some producer with time to kill) but the album was called Star Wars & Other Galactic Funk and had artwork (and tunes) to die for <3

shambles your post just reminded me of the show ripping yarns dont know if you remember it...

As it happens, I have the script book of 'em and do recall watching 'em at the time (vaguely). Re-read the scripts (also got the complete Monty Python series scripts - fanboy :o).

More nostalgia from me....

Bjork - There's more to life than this (recorded live at the milk bar toilets) - THE version of this track... which is why I was genuinely puzzled to find...

Björk - There's more to life than this (studio version)

Must admit I don't recall ever hearing the latter. Must also admit it's pretty damn clear why she put the other version on the album :D

Björk was (and frankly still is) probably my one and only "celebrity crush". Saw the video of Human Behaviour when it came out and rushed down to the library to acquire the rest of the album. Saw the pic on the cover... never been the same since. The gal simply exudes sex appeal on every conceivable level then tacks a few more storeys on top of those levels all of her very own <3

And whilst at it, this was the first coloured vinyl album I bought - bright, bright, BRIGHT Barbie pink thing so it was (and presumably still is). Never did see the vid until as recently as maybe a year or two back though. Well worth a watch if you haven't - Michel Gondry innit <3

Björk - Army of Me

And one more for the road - duet with Thom Yorke?!? Yes please <3

GWAR Frontman Dave ‘Oderus Urungus’ Brockie Dead at 50

420088_4386377938792_696141217_n.jpg

It’s with great sadness that we report the death of GWAR frontman Dave ‘Oderus Urungus‘ Brockie. According to various sources, Brockie’s body was found on the evening of March 23.
No cause of death has been reported as of this posting, but a member of the Richmond Police Department claims that Brockie, 50, was found dead sometime between 3pm and 7pm on March 23.

“Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve known,” former GWAR bassist Mike Bishop tells Style Weekly. “He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”

Bishop continues, “His penchant for scatological humors belied a lucid wit. He was a criminally underrated lyricist and hard rock vocalist, one of the best, ever! A great front man, a great painter, writer, he was also a hell of a bass guitarist. I loved him. He was capable of great empathy and had a real sense of justice.”

GWAR manager Jack Flanagan released the official statement on Brockie’s death:

It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 PM EST Sunday March 23, 2014. His body was found Sunday by his band mate at his home in Richmond, VA. Richmond authorities have confirmed his death and next of kin has been notified. A full autopsy will be performed. He was 50 years old, born August 30, 1963.

My main focus right now is to look after my band mates and his family. More information regarding his death shall be released as the details are confirmed.

Lamb of God vocalist and fellow Richmond native Randy Blythe also confirmed Brockie’s passing in a heartfelt Instagram post:

I got a very sad call tonight from my buddy Chris Bopst, who was one of the original members of GWAR- my friend Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, the singer of GWAR, has left the building & taken off back to his home planet. He was 50 years old. I do not know details of why he died yet, just that he passed away at home & his roommates found him. When someone dies, a lot of the time people will say “Oh, he was a unique person, really one of a kind, a true original”- most of these people no idea of what they are talking about- they obviously had never met Dave. Dave TRULY WAS ONE OF A KIND- I can’t think of ANYONE even remotely like him. That’s VERY HARD TO SAY. My band learned how to become a real touring band from GWAR- they gave us out first shot at this thing. I learned many things from Dave, many of which I am eternally grateful for, and some of which I am deeply ashamed of. I took this picture at his birthday party a few months ago- Dave kissing his Oderous birthday cake. Right now, if I were to truly honor Dave in the way HE would do it if it were ME that had died, I would make a completely tasteless joke about his death. But I do not have the stomach for that- Dave would, but not me. He never put much stock in “limits”. Richmond, VA has lost one of its most creative people. This is a crying shame to me. Thank you Brockie, for all the crazy shit you did- thank God you existed, so you could do it and I didn’t have to. It was an honor to know you, to be your Shaky Slave, to serve in the Blood Vomits along side you (let’s ride!), and to be soaked by your sweet cuttlefish. RIP Dave Brockie. Oderous, enjoy your trip back home.

We’ve had plenty of run-ins with Dave Brockie over the years, but the last time we saw him, Oderus starred in by far the greatest video we’ve ever produced. It may be hard to smile today, but in remembrance of GWAR’s leader, we’re proud to share Oderus Urungus’ hysterical reading of ‘Goodnight Moon.’

KISS Bassist Gene Simmons: Ace Frehley + Peter Criss ‘No Longer Deserve to Wear the Paint’

147831383.jpg

How much uglier could it get between current and former members of KISS? The iconic act will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, choosing not to perform at the ceremony after various conflicts. However, Gene Simmons just launched perhaps the most insulting comment to date in the direction of classic members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame found themselves on the wrong side of KISS, opting to induct only Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, snubbing longtime members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, though cumulatively, the two have dedicated over 25 years to KISS.

Somehow, it’s gotten even worse, as evidenced in a new Rolling Stone interview with various KISS members. “We’ve always seen each other as brothers,” Stanley says about Simmons. “What we seem to be at odds at is how you treat your brother. Gene’s priority, by far, has always been himself. And he’s not one to let anyone else’s feelings or contributions get in the way.”

Peter Criss adds to the interview, revealing that Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons’ offer to jam with Thayer and Singer at the Rock Hall induction was disrespectful. “How can you put me in the Hall of Fame and then tell me to go sit over there in the corner while another guy puts on my makeup and plays?” asks Criss. “That’s an injustice. To the fans, too.”

Simmons’ barb towards his former bandmates, however, is arguably the most insulting comment unleashed during this whole Rock Hall debacle. “[Frehley and Criss] no longer deserve to wear the paint,” says Simmons. “Just being there at the beginning is not enough… And if you blow it for yourself, it’s your fault. You can’t blame your band members. ‘Oh, look what happened to me. Oh, poor me.’ Look at my little violin. I have no sympathy.”

For the rest of the Rolling Stone exclusive, visit their official website. Nirvana, KISS + many others will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10.

Aerosmith + Slash Set to Announce 2014 U.S. Tour

Aerosmith-Slash.jpg

Two of hard rock’s legendary acts are teaming up for a 2014 U.S. summer tour, as Aerosmith will hit the road with Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. The news was revealed Friday (March 21) via tweets from members of Aerosmith, as well as Slash himself.

It doesn’t get much bigger than Aerosmith and Slash when it comes to American hard rock. Aerosmith have recorded some of the biggest rock hits on the planet, while Slash achieved mammoth success as a member of Guns N’ Roses. Both acts are known for their down and dirty, raw approach to rock ‘n’ roll.

Aerosmith’s most recent album is 2012′s ‘Music From Another Dimension,’ but you can be sure the band will be playing their classic hits like ‘Dream On,’ ‘Walk This Way’ and ‘Sweet Emotion.’

Slash, meanwhile, is getting ready to release his next album with his bandmates Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. The guitarist revealed during South By Southwest that the disc is expected to arrive in September, while Kennedy tweeted out a couple days ago that he just completed the album’s first vocal.

While no dates have been announced yet for the Aerosmith / Slash 2014 U.S. tour, both acts have confirmed the news via Tweets from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and drummer Joey Kramer, as well as a Tweet from Slash. Check out those Tweets, as well as Myles Kennedy’s update on the new Slash album:

I fukkin loathe Queen with a passion beyond words.

Queen do seem to be one of those bands that you either love or hate.

There was a small handfull of Queen fans in my school, including myself. It was a fine day, the day after Live Aid when everyone who didn't previously like Queen had to admit that they had made an outstandingly awesome performance in electifying the audience of the stadium and viewers around the world. That was a great time to be a Queen fan, they finally got their moment of glory and universal acclaim, after much critical dismissal.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy-oh. :D
