What Are You Listening To? v. Music to my ears (NO EMBEDS)

Ooh! Speaking of recreating throwaway digital music collections, thanks for reintroducting that one to my favourites folder, Spliff =D<3=D

How did I know what song I wanted before getting the vinyl? By listening to radio (as suggested - even R1 played class tunes 20... *gulps*... 30-odd years ago (John Peel <3)) and the fact that (almost) everybody I knew had amazing taste in music. Old folks had quality collections I attempted to replicate, contempories were either DJs (or otherwise part of various "scenes") or owned record shops and stuff. Or just had great taste in general so I trusted what they suggested. I absolutely couldn't do it again (in vinyl terms) these days but am reasonably sure anybody with halfway decent taste and a record player could rustle up a collection to die for at the time. As I said, choice is wider than ever, it's quality, format and price that have all gone tits up in recent years :\

Excellent colab isnt it =D? Goes so perfectly together. Always been a fan of Hip-hop mashups when do correctly.

After reading your reply i know realise what a stupid question it was haha. Sounds like it would take a lot more effort to create a decent music collection; must have been exceptionally rewarding! Its still taken effort to string together my collection, but as it was all done just sitting at a computer you cant really compare the two haha.

I know its probably that age old 'grass is always greener' situation, but despite the extra effort, i wish it was back to the vinyl days. Any cunt can put together a music collection these days, but only the true music lovers would build such a collection through vinyl.
 
Cant actually play tunes out load at the moment as my mum is kippin' away in the other room and i have nay headphones, but have added it to my favourites for later!

You dont think if it went back to the vinyl days you wouldnt seen start missing the ease of getting music through a few clicks of the mouse?

Rargh really wish i could listen to some music. Atm ive just got the hum of my computer, which isnt as enchantingly melodic as it sounds :|

Give me an hour or so till i've had my meth and i'll get right back on to listening and posting tunes haha. Bit monged from the valium atm

Edit - fuck it bumdrop time haha - give me 10 minutes =D Ive convinced myself if i have it now, i'll get some kip at a reasonable time. Other than the meth last week i was only touching stimulants about 4 times a year, so just taking the piss a bit till the rest of this half g runs out ;)

Yep. Reason being you had to work to find cool stuff back then, as Shambles said. When you succeeded, the satisfaction was immense. It was like a secret world with every purchase / acquisition - tape trading being a necessity as well as a crime, given the poor distribution of independent records back then.

Anybody with a lastfm account today can build up a cursory knowledge of stuff like The Stooges, which you still had to dig for in the early-to-mid nineties. It seems to cheapen things somewhat, and I have a feeling that in some cases it's devalued the subcultural capital of a lot of 'cool' stuff. I'm aware that sounds wanky and exclusive, but that's not how I mean it; you used to feel a kinship with somebody who liked the same stuff as you. That isn't really there any longer.

Am I romanticising? Definitely, but only a little.

The way it used to be definitely sounds better to me. The extra effort that had to go into building a vast music collect does sound like it would be extremely satisfying. Thats not to say that it isnt satisfying finding obscure gems on the web, but compared to actually getting off your arse and going crate-digging sounds like an adventure in itself. I bet the feeling of coming across an obscure vinyl that was, in the fear of sounding like a twat, absolute dynamite, it must have been immensely rewarding. And to top it off, you actual own and can hold your precious finds, rather than it just being an MP3 file.

Having no experienced from that era, i would love to be able for it to go back to how it was. The time and effort put into getting such vinyls just makes it all the sweeter when you own a substantial collection.
 
Hahaha i knew there was an underlying reason for your great fondness of vinyl ;)

That seems like such an odd concept to me. Couldnt imagine a girl coming round to listen to some new MP3s that i have downloaded hah. Perhaps i just need to be a lot more forceful and intimidating.

And yeah saw it about half a year ago - excellent watch! For a day or two after watching it, i was inspired to try the same thing, but clearly nothing came of it haha. Watched a couple of Mix Master Mikes sets and the guy is crazy!

Hahaha yeah girls love a man articulate enough to use the word 'mint' or 'pukka' always seems to work; put em both into a sentence and your guaranteed a aggressive fuck. "Fuck me Shanequa, your looking right pukka today me old moosh. 'Ow bout ya jump in me van and we'll listen to this down-right mint happy 'ardcore mix i stole from Oxfam" Those are the types of 'gash' you wanna attract; real wifey material.
