What are you listening to? Part XXX - Sexxxy tunes for sexxxy folks

Apparently this, one of the Peanuts Specials soundtracks from the 1960s, is an iconic festive favourite, (admittedly more so in the USA) but I had never even heard it until today!

What a fun little jazzy tune!

If I could play piano, I'd sure like to be able to play this.

It's almost as cool as The Pink Panther theme tune.

It took me a while, but I realised I had both this tune and Machine Messiah by Yes playing simultaneously! And it was pretty magnificent.

You must have somehow managed to get the tracks to sync up nicely, I just tried and it sounded awful.

It probably should sound awful. But sometimes awful isn't quite what it seems. I'm into Miles Davis and Coltrane these days, and sometimes they sound like they're making nonsense, but listen for a while and it's genius.

So do you like Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica album?

It sounds so much like everyone in the band is 'doing their own thing', just playing random and entirely different tunes, in random entirely different time signatures, and all at the same time. But apparently Beefheart put his band through absolute torture after the initial recording of the album, as he forced them to practice for weeks, until they were able to replicate the whole thing, exactly as per the recording, time and time again.

And if it really is just the total spontaneous nonsense that it mostly sounds like to me, then that makes Beefheart's band absolute genuises to be able to do what they managed to do. As several people have commented before me.

You'll know how polarised opinions are regarding this album. Is it absolute genius, or is it just random noise, that each musician literally just made up as they went along? (Or is it both?)

And then Beefheart recorded his vocals over the top of the music, IIRC.
