What are you listening to? Part XXX - Sexxxy tunes for sexxxy folks

Yep that's edgy alright. But obviously feel free to post w/e you wish, you don't have to post the kind of tracks I'd come to expect from you.

To quote SLF "You'll never get the best of you, when you do what they expect you to"

That line just line resonated with me, and I sometimes deliberately post and act apparently out of character, knowing it will surprise people, but it's all genuine (I mean what I'm saying in the posts). Obviously, no one is a one dimensional stereotype after all.

It may only be P:R and APF reading and maybe listening to some of my posts about folk, in which case they'll already know this track.

I'm not going to hype it up.

But anyone else who doesn't know the track, and is vaguely curious or interested as to how good old school English folk music can sound, then this isn't the worst place to start.

(Although tbh it's definitely folk rock, rather than 'pure folk'. I'd imagine that it would work great done in a traditional pure folk format, and I'll have a look to see if they did a pure folk version. I'm sure they did, just whether it's available to listen to or not.)

There's probably 20+ folk songs from exact same root as Matty Groves, exact same narrative different names, some exact same lines too, such is the nature of the genre, the original 'sampling' really

This is more of a poet backed by folk music. His voice is definitely not what you'd usually expect, but his lyrics are the best thing I've heard / read outside of actual literature. He's actually a really lovely bloke too, who sent my then-girlfriend a box of rare and signed vinyl because I told him something I was buying was a birthday present.

Thanks for the links. Interesting stuff, and definitely material for the traditionalists and 'purists' I'd say.

That doesn't mean I don't like them, I can hear the quality, and I suspect all 3 tracks are growers, that may take a couple more listens before I more fully connect with them.

I'm definitely interested in Planxty, already being familiar with Christy Moore, and I agree the narrative is the same as Matty Groves. I guess all the variations originated from a source played by musicians in local taverns etc long before the days of vinyl recordings. And it was passed on from one generation to the next.

I'll try and see if there are any semi decent music documentaries about the history of folk and leading to modern day folk music. BBC4 might well have made a stab at the subject at some point in time, and that might be my best bet for a decent watch. But there may be other sources.

There's been plenty of 'history of rock' record sets, books, and documetaries, etc, so I think there must have been at least a few made about folk. There will probably be a lot more USA based ones on youtube, but I'll be doing some digging.

Back in the day Andy Kershaw seemed to be one of the best sources for folk/acoustic/country/world music on the radio. Does anyone know if anyone else has taken up the mantle of selecting and playing the best historic and current tracks in these genres?

I guess there might be something up that alley on BBC radio6.
 
Planxty are a wonderful band, and probably's Ireland's 'supergroup'. Make sure you listen to their Dublin Olympia Theatre gigs at some stage. Shows just how 100% in the pocket they were when they played together.

Although I never claimed to be The Arbiter of Passable Taste, and it's only my subjective opinion, but that post fails on several fronts. :sus:
