I'm the same way. Back when this was new I liked Black Sabbath, Sly and the Family Stone, CSN&Y and mainly the fiftys, sixtys street corner soul groupes.

I still think "Oh my Angel" by Bertha Tillman is one of the most mellow tunes ever. As far as men singers go Michael McDonald is one of the greats..

That said, that super mellow California sound is hands down one of the best sounds to ever come out. The Superbs come to the top in my mellow category..
