Apparently, the Catholic Church used to regard them as fish, rather than birds, because of their ability to swim in the sea. This meant that people could eat them during Lent.
In my maternal grandparents' house, the fish on Friday thing went on all year. Mayo folk. Headbanging Papists. I hated fish too.
Anywhere outside of Irish cities over here is like the league of gentlemen ffs.
