Social What are you currently reading?

I'm halfway through "Friday" by Robert Heinlein (the author of Starship Troopers). Great popcorn science fiction. Full of bisexual Mormon communists and artificial sphincters. Wonderfully written, as always with Heinlein. Fantastic dialogue, great humor. Some interesting concepts. Totally unpredictable and unconventional plot. Immensely likable, and well established, protagonist.

"Friday" is equal parts commercial and literary. It's a weird combination of mindlessness and political commentary. Probably the strangest Heinlein novel I've ever read. Reminds me of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep in parts, with occasional Sin City moments. And a considerable amount of futuristic erotica.

I kept wanting to put that down and read instead more Mikel Montaigne, the selected essays version I have of Montaigne is next to EGB as far as what inspires me, only, these are two vastly different novels but absolutely fine.

Near me is the Natural Evolution of the Senses By Diana Ackerman is also a favorite of mine, one that when I see a copy for sale, I will by it only to give away to whom ever seems they would enjoy enough, or probably should read and find some innocent enough enlightenment.
 
starting on skagboys by irvine welsh, which is his prequel to trainspotting. considering how utterly shitty his last two novels were, let's hope this is a return to form, as his early writing holds a special place in my heart.
 
okay, i finished the fucking border trilogy. one thing about cormac mccarthy: he is a wonderful writer, but a thousand pages of his stuff was clearly too much. and even though i liked it, it was nowhere close to suttree or blood meridian.
now i'm gonna read the remaining factory novels by derek raymond. i really, really liked he died with his eyes open and from what i heard the rest of the novels are equally good. also, i kinda need a break from writing that takes itself too serious.
 
At the moment i am reading "the great shark hunt" by Hunter S. Thompson xD it's amazing. i just read "Fear and Loathing...." and i was in awe of his power over the pen, i needed more. Luckily my Girlfriend is a fan too haha :D
 
Moby Dick. Before that it was the last dune book and "A short history of everything" I forget the authors name. Excellent reads, dune being a classic, of course.

In the car I turn on "text-to-speech" and currently I'm listening to thompsons "hells angels" from a robot voice.

Strange experience but, whatever works.

Shark hunt is volume 1. Get to songs of the doomed and kingdom of fear in that order when you're done. Hilariously satirical and brutal fantasty and ethical fortitude.

You can wait on "generation of swine." The 80's were pretty boring.

I love that book as much as I loved "Brothers Karamazov"
 
Thomas Madden's The New Concise History of the Crusades.
Capsule: An easy read, and highly recommended for any history buffs interested in a (very) general intro to the Crusades.

Edmund Morris's Theodore Rex, about Teddy Roosevelt's Presidency.
Capsule: Excellent, but *demands* that you take time with it. Plan to read the other books in the trilogy (The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Colonel Roosevelt) at some point.
 
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

I am absolutely enthralled, and that is putting it lightly. Took me about a month to read The Fellowship of the Ring due to time constraints; I am currently blowing through The Two Towers (half way through in two or three days) and am really glad I picked up the third from the library.
 
Assuming this is your first time reading the series, you're in for a real treat when you get to Return of the King, which would be a great novel even as a stand-alone, IMO.
 
Moby Dick and the Old Man and the Sea.

Sort of a nautical kick.

I've been listening to naked lunch read by burroughs on audiobook at work. Have junky too.

PM me if you want the downloads, his reading them is far easier to dig than reading them with your own inner dialogue voice. IMO.
