What are you currently reading? v2

No, i love the author reading out his own words to me. He is literally telling you his own story. I can connect to it much better that way.

There's a Michael Gira audio story collection out there. Now that's an experience... 8o

This isn't on it, but see if you can make it past five minutes without getting queasy: I Am An Infant, I Worship Him‎

The more recent stuff is slightly mellower.

I shall investigate. Im wondering whether to get back on some mdai or not. It'll probably boost my mood short term, but i wonder if it'll destabalise my mood on the comedown. It shouldnt be that drastic as its the mildest and gentlest of drugs, its been over a year since i last took it, and cant remember what the after effects were like.

I have never tried them and tbh thought it was some random reading a book to you. I will download one and give it a try - Its hard to explain but I find reading a private thing (pure my time) not sure If I could have that 'alone' time with a person talking to me?

Audio books make me fall asleep. The information doesn't go in if I'm listening to someone talking. I don't get on well with radio either. Maybe only my eyes are properly engaged with my brain heh.

Just finished this, excellent read!

Nah, some people process things very differently to others. Written words or those spoken in rhythm, I remember. Other than that, I'm easily lost or distracted. Hence my lack of love for TV / film (aside from the fact it's mostly shite anyhow).

Likewise. I don't get on with audiobooks because I find I get irritated by how they're read - with pauses and emphasis often cropping up in the wrong places compared to how I would be reading it. I prefer having the option of revisiting passages or ideas when reading at my own pace (or skipping bits as well!). However I find that audiobooks can be a lifesaver during periods of insomnia - I nearly always tend to drift off within 45-60 minutes...

I'm really enjoying dipping in and out of this at the moment:

Can anyone recommend other good authors of short stories (with an emphasis on short)? I've already read all of Raymond Carver's work.

Exactly this, I think actually read by scanning over paragraphs and building up a picture rather than in an entirely linear fashion sometimes :/

im writing a book and have found reading fiction whilst doing so tricky so ATM I got Clarke Carlisle's book on the go, cracking stuff :)

Just bought 'Shift' and 'Dust' which are the second and third part of the Trilogy I mentioned above by Hugh Howey. Also bought 'Reviver' Seth Patrick as it caught my eye so that should keep me busy for a while.

recently browsed through the first part of a book of memoirs by colin powell "it worked for me".
quite interesting, easy reading. leaders (form teams at work to country presidents) would do well to read a bit of it and try to work some of the ideas in it in day to day life.

Does he discuss his ideas where he helped whitewash the My Lai massacre in the Vietnam war?

Still trying to work out how I can incorporate invading foreign countries and civilian massacre (actually that shouldn't be too hard) into my daily life.

The Satanic Verses by Rushdie. Has been part of my collection for ages but only now have I taken to reading it. Liking it so far!

all that publicity round that book must have made rushdie a very wealthy man. he was like the osama bin laden of the 1980s , the most wanted dead man in the world according to the media.

anyway, I've just finished Ecstasy by Irvine welsh and am going to re read filth since I found the film very disappointing even if it was enjoyable, not worht the 9.10 p I spent to get in when i foolishly should have walked in without paying because there wasn't a soul on the tills, nor was there anyone at the screen entrance. on my exit the vue lads nodded in agreement and said yes you should have. ah well, I'll know for again that if i go to a late showing just to rah walk in .

no, surprisingly enough, it concentrates more on his life after the military. it can be quite preachy at times... im not that familiar with his life or deeds

Yeah sorry Kingme I have a downer on Mr Powell for reasons stated.

If you don't mind me asking..if you knew nothing of his life previously, what drew you in to read his memoirs?
