What are the risks of tripping and becoming permanently disturbed?

I've done DXM and cannabis and it showed me things that disturbed me long after I came down. DXM especially would show me things that I had to learn to cope with. I'm not necessarily as disturbed anymore, I think if anything it was a growing experience. Cannabis and DXM sometimes show me reality and I have to learn to accept it. (I smoke weed constantly btw and revelations don't happen that often, but I quit doing DXM because I'm usually bound to have a bad trip)

But once while I was staying in Detroit I bought some bunk ecstasy because I was stupid and didn't know about testing and stuff. Turns out it wasn't ecstasy and I think it was 2-5i or something because I know this guy who bought bunk acid and it was 2-5i and he had a lot of the same effects I did. (plus I was in a TERRIBLE set & setting, a terrible attic that was made into an apartment with noisy ghetto neighbors downstairs, I just heard it was near impossible to have a bad trip on ecstasy and wanted to try something new)

He and I were persistently disturbed months after our trips. He still has PTSD from it, I'm fine now but it took me forever for the anxiety to go away. It took forever for the world to seem less cold and for people to seem more friendly. I felt totally separated from reality and I felt about people like I feel about animals, it was like me and everyone else was a totally different species. While I was tripping everyone's faces looked evil and demonic and it took months for that to go away although it was nowhere near as bad in the following months as it was when I was tripping.

One thing I still kinda feel that I'm not happy with is "What makes life so special when all it takes is 2 people fucking to create it?"

Which is why I'm wanting to branch out to psychedelics. I plan on taking shrooms soon. I hope they can help me, but I'm worried they'll have the opposite effect. I've managed to make 99% of my anxiety go away on my own, and I've learned to accept and be happy with a lot of the revelations that have been given to me, but I still have a long way to go.

What do you think? Am I risking just throwing myself back into disturbia if I mess with psychedelics? Or is there a better chance I will see the world in a better light?

It may be just 2 people fucking to you, but it's a miracle of complexity to me. The fact that a women can clone a human being within herself. The resilience and sophistication of nature, the human mind and body stagger the mind!

Anyway yeah, drug experiences can be traumatic. I have been disturbed quite often on drugs. What can I say, you have to placate yourself, keep calm and carry on.

With shrooms recently I found the first hour or two tough going. I nearly had a panic attack. You have to be able to calm yourself down. If you managed 25I alright in a shitty setting you should be ok though. It's important to plan your trip and be in a good mindframe and setting.

Well after the difficult stage, the shrooms rewarded me with the most infinite bliss imaginable. I only felt feelings of compassion, appreciation and love. The universe revealed itself to me and made perfect sense. I had no fear, no anxiety. The lack of anxiety carried over after my trip and I think it's improved my life. Good luck!

reading a few books will remove your issue with life's simplicity.

As for the drugs... dont look at them as a cure.. they can help you do the work, but you have to do the work regardless of whether you have drugs or not. have you gotten into CBT etc? If not I'd suggest learning about that before tripping again, as the info is not only useful for anxiety/etc, but also for dealing with psychedelic experiences.

psychedelics give you a lot of realisations. some are going to be banal, some deep, some outright nonsense if you think about it on the next day. if these realisations reassure, amuse or disturb you if basically wholly dependant on your environment, your expecations and what's hidden in your mind. no one can tell you what you're going to experience. and if you have a history of being easily disturbed by such effects then maybe psychedelics aren't for you?

I second this notion.

That nagging want of something more out of, or more than, mundane life is what leads lots of people to use psychedelics. So you're not ill suited for tripping, if you mind your set and setting you can greatly lessen the chance of repeating a negative experience like last time. On the other hand, you need to be fully prepared to accept whatever experience will come your way. If you're happy with your life, and think you're developing well, then are you prepared to risk getting that all fucked up through a negative experience or obsession with hippie/New Age nonsense?

It sounds to me like your problem is youthful jadedness with your environment. I'd recommend learning (through books, internet, classes, whatever floats your boat), cultivating new hobbies, and getting active in your community. It's far more likely to cure what ails you, and the psychedelics ought to push you in that direction anyway, but take longer and be more confusing.

Do you by any chance have a family history of schizophrenia or any other mental illnesses? These types of drugs can cause such conditions to emerge in people who are predisposed to them.

Indeed! & are we sure we want to advocate the use of Psychedelics in someone who'd already had negative drug experience issue?

If you must try it OP, shrooms are a reasonable option because the dosage can be controlled & the trip isn't that long. Nonetheless, I'd advise very conservative dosing & a great deal of mental preparation beforehand.

There is absolutely no way to answer this - by nature the psychedelic experience is unpredictable. You can tilt the odds in your favor to some extent by optimizing set and setting, but ultimately each trip is a gamble (as, at a basic level, is everything in existence).

Having said that, anxiety about having a bad trip of course makes that outcome more likely. Also, mushrooms can, for some (I'm one) be the most unforgiving and terrifying psychedelic.

i always say it's a 50/50 shot, not great odds, you can tip them in your favor as mentioned above but you're still taking a risk.

if you know how to cope with anxiety, and it sounds like you do then i think your odds are much better than 50/50. You already know that DXM can show you the truth of things or show you life from a different perspective. It's the same with psychedelics. You may get hit with questions about your life, your path, your past, childhood stuff and the future but that's what you're looking for right? Well if not, dealing with that stuff will help your feelings about the mundane reality we humans sometimes experience.

life is a lot more special than 2 people fucking. That's not even how life was created, that's just how we reproduce. Think about the big bang, particles flying everywhere, massive expansion, particles colliding, molecules being created, molecules hitting molecules creating simple life forms, then evolution and some how we are here today. That's fucking amazing if you ask me. Just the fact we can think about things like this is amazing, or even communicate at all, or that there is life. Now that i think about it, a psychedelic may indeed be a good idea for you. It's a helpful reminder of all that is beautiful and fascinating about life in this universe.

and yeah watch your set and setting, tripping in an attic with crazy neighbors below is the exact type of thing that will give me severe anxiety while tripping.

recommendation: 2c-i and then work your way up. Even smoking some DMT, while it may scare the shit out of you at first, is insanely fascinating. Life is a bit mundane sometimes but follow your passions and you'll more often than not feel that life is wonderful, beautiful, profoundly amazing and fascinating. We all have our ups and downs.

OP, I noticed you state your location as "different places at different times". Try looking for what's always been here with you every time.

Its a coin toss but its a part of it ime. As long as you have done your research thoroughly on whatever your consuming, have a good set and setting, your confident and consuming a reasonable dose that you weighed out yourself if possible you should be fine ime. Might want to have a benzodiazepine on hand just in case if your going through some times where you would really like to calm down, xanax/klonopin/Valium works good. I would not eat more than 2 grams of dried mushrooms your first time. Even 1.5gs would be fine if they are strong, be careful with mushrooms they can be pretty unforgiving ime. The experience is always changing though, you can have many pleasant/comfortable experiences with a particular substance and have it out of no where throw something new at you that can potentially throw you off. Its a coin toss or kind of like Russian roulette but your not getting shot.

I don't know about 'permanently' disturbed, but a bad experience can leave a lasting effect for a while depending on the severity of it.

A breakthrough dose of DMT really unhinged me for a couple of years, but it gave me a lot of time to integrate that experience into my life.
