What are the DanceSafe test kits packed in?

Vermiculite, probably. Just something to soak up any spills if a bottle breaks. It's horrible for static cling but it's otherwise inert.

Grow mushrooms on it or throw it in your garden.

yes, it's vermiculite. I believe it's made by heating mica, causing it to expand. It's typicall used as a soil amendment, to lighten the soil, and also to hold water.

I think they use it just as a cushion and an agent to capture any leakage.
