what are most Aussies prescribed for severe pain?

from my understanding nothing. I got told it would worsen the problem with your kidneys being under so much stress as the are. Sooner you piss them out the better

That's scary advice. Pain relief has no deleterious effect on the passing of a stone. If your doctor truly told you that, and you truly suffer from kidney stones, imho find another doctor. Pain management in regards to patients suffering from kidney stones is standard practise. :)

hi all after years of being on panadiene forte for a back injury related to a car accident my doce sent me to a pain specialist who now has prescibed me with jurnista it is new on the market added to the pbs in may 2009 it is hydromorphone comes in 8,16,32, and 64mgs it is a 24hr slow release, im currently on 16mg, it has little to no abuse potential does not crush up etc, it is made using the oros system which is a push pull system, there is a laser drilled hole in it which controlls the way the drug is released (you can google it and will give you far more info than i can me buggered typing) I believe this drug is great, for me the no abuse potential is awsome as there is far less temptation and also it works, granted i dont get high or whatever but im not in pain, i guess as it gets more known you will see it take over from the more conventional s8 pain drugs, if you want serious pain relief this drug is worth discussing with your doctor as far as im concerned its brilliant as a pain killer it has certainly helped improve the quality of my life

just checking mims, there's also 4mg as well, just a fyi.

i'll have to look into the release system, there's no mention of it on mims that i can see(maybe im just overlooking things like usual), definitely sounds interesting though.

might be worth looking into myself, one day. thanks for sharing:)

^i don't know why i'm even responding to you but here goes anyway,

physical therapy is something i partake in part of my PM, i don't just rely on my script. you obviously know nothing of my past, so throw your personal attacks out the door.

by your logic, noone in pain needs medication. just a teaspoon of concrete in the morning to harden the fuck up.

i have been assessed by specialists and many doctors along the way since being diagnosed at 16, many who have mentioned surgery to me, whom all agreed with me it's not in my best interest. it's not something successful enough, especially for 23 year old to risk. obviously i've been lucky enough to have doctors smart enough to realise the "controversy" has to do with sucess rate.

i'm educated in what i'm doing, and although it's not the ideal lifestyle i'm living at the moment (dependence and the pain i'm in), i'm making the most out of my situation one step at a time.

obviously you've never suffered from any type of long term chronic pain.

Wow, I was wondering when they'd release something like that. I've had that idea for years lol I better go look it up, sounds promising.

IMO some doctors are seriously ridiculous with the opiates they give out. Like some people get oxy for just getting their wisdom teeth removed. Whereas other doctors would be hesitant to even give panadeine forte.

This leads to addiction in some cases obviously and then it just makes it harder for people who really need these meds to get them. I can see why people get addicted to opiates, and I have sympathy for them, because not many people can resist such a feeling after experiencing it. But I also feel equally sorry for the people who are in severe pain and can't get strong opiates because doctors don't wanna lose their license etc.

Iv had 2 operations and was scripted panadine forte and mysindol forte (sp). Why anyone would want mysindol forte for is beyond me. I found it more plesent to deal with throbbing pain.
It's coz mersyndol has doxylamine succinate in it which is a muscle relaxant. So it would be good for operations involving the back/neck/jaw etc.

if the time release your talking about is like that of concerta it can be abused. that is if it works on the idea that a "sponge" slowly inflates within the hard pill coat (which may or may not contain a small dose of the mediation to be released intially) and gradually pushes the mayority of the medication through the laser made hole.

im not sure how it works but if you google you will find loads of info on it, i guess if theres a will theres a way to tamper with it but id rather not know, also its to my understanding that the pharm company that makes it has made it so its abuse proof so to speak

Pain is subjective, and its impossible for any other person to quantify any individual's suffering without being that individual.

I have a relation who is prescribed the following for a rare genetic disorder that causes chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

Ordine 10mg/ml (breakthrough pain)
MS Contin 30mg (baseload relief)
MS Contin 60mg (increased baseload relief)
MS Mono 60mg (relief maintenance)
DiGesic
GabaPentin 600mg (neuropathic pain management)
Valium

There's a selection of other meds required too that deal with various aspects of the genetic disorder suffered, but these are the majors. Needless to say while these meds help, they do not come close to addressing the pain my relation suffers on a daily basis.

Hope this is useful to someone...

Looks like i've got postherpetic neuralgia from stupid fucking shingles, with my rash being all but nearly gone, but the intense stabbing pain still in my back and ribs, it's fucked up.

The doctor has got me on the usual panadeine forte(30mg codeine, 500 paracetamol), this does fuck all to be honest, so i went back and he gave me more codeine and this anti depressant drug called amitriptyline. This shit is fucked, makes me not feel like myself and is way too sedating.

So basically next week i'm going to go in and see the doctor, and explain to him i dont want to be on fucking antidepressant drugs for my pain, and am going to bring my mother in so i don't look so dodge(its legitamate but i still feel guilty asking for pain releif that actually works, stupid tight ass doctors), and ask for some opiate kind of pain releiver thats stronger than codeine.

So obviously that is tramadol. I'm just wondering if anyone here knows or has heard about codeine tablets that are stronger than the usual 30mg ones.

^no there aren't any stronger than 30mg codeine tabs. there are pure 30mg codeine tabs, though. though they're noramlly used in diarrhea predominant IBS. though i get them prescribed on top of my morphine and tramadol as i don't react well to NSAIDs, particularly ibuprufen and paracetemol.

you'll likely be given tramadol if the doctor is willing, possible endone if he's generous. it might be worth getting a second opinion from another doctor if you feel your treatment is insufficient.

^ Cheers man, i might do exactly that. Go in on monday and see what he says, i want to try tramadol, i'd rather be on weak as possible opioid due to addiction issues and shit, and see how that does for my pain.

But yeah if he's not willing and wants to keep writing me codeine, i'll take the codeine and then go for a second opinion.

Does anyone know if all doctors, without any specific extra pain medication license can prescribe tramadol or endone.

Like what is the cut off point for your average gp, i was thinking maybe endone is likely the strongest they can script you, and anything that requires stronger pain releif than that would see you being refered to a specilist

^All gp's in Australia are allowed to prescribe Tramadol and Endone. It is pretty hard to get them to do so, but if you have a legitimate case they have been known to hand it out.

This may sound funny, but the very best pain medicine I have been on is buprenorphine. The high is minimal, and the pain relief is good. I started on the patches and now take suboxone. The half life of bup is nice and long so I don't get inter dose withdrawal symptoms.
