Hey all, im pescribed 200 mg tramadol twice daily for my dodgy back, and have a few friends on fent patches (sadly) cause off medical conditions...
just curious who out there in aus is in similar... im not asking for any reasons for what you take/perscribed but what are other people are being pescribed for there pain.

thanks AUS all replies apreciated..

I would imagine it would vary widely depending on the doctor, the patient, the nature of the injury and the severity of the pain. Tramadol would probably be the most commonly prescribed painkiller (apart from panadeine forte) as it has the least abuse potential.

Over the years I have seen everything from panadeine forte to oxy contin prescribed for severe pain, mainly back pain.

I agree with drug mentor that the most common would be tramadol after panadeine forte

It is getting less and less likely that you would get prescribed anything heavier than tramadol in Australia without a long history of severe pain.

Iv had 2 operations and was scripted panadine forte and mysindol forte (sp). Why anyone would want mysindol forte for is beyond me. I found it more plesent to deal with throbbing pain.

thanks, thats my sentiments exactly, tram works fine with me, and my few unlucky friends on fent seem ok as they can be... forte's off some description seem obvious option, or capadex if after surgery.. only know a few ppl on oxy after car accidents, but was wondering if anyone else has heard off anything else. i saw on a different site the other day that pethadine was most abused in Aus, thought that might play into it...
i want off anything associated with ssri's, i just dont feel normal on them, but nothing else has worked...

Was given oxycodone when I was recuperating from a fractured femur.

As stipulated by a few posters, really does depend on the type/level of pain....

Am sure many self-medicate with other things, howvever ;)

in my experience it was this in order of prescriptions, begining at the age of 18, im now nearly 24

codeine/doxy

tramadol (18-21)

bupe patches (allergic reaction to latex in adhesive so changed to, worked great, used for about a year and 3 months or so)

fent patches (had problems with adhesive in warmer temps, perspiration. has been the best for round the clock pain control and would use again if it weren't for the troubles i had, plus i abused the shit out of them. used for 3-4 months)

oxycodone (oxycontin, only about 1-2 months use)

morphine (mscontins, been on for about 3 months now)

theres a lot of factors to take into consideration to what is going to be prescribed.

+1

i should probably state i have spondylolisis to my L4, L5 and S1 with sclerosis to the facet joints. i've had many x-rays and mri's over the years and appts for second opinions, etc, etc.

Both my dad (Back problems) and my friend (Shoulder reconstruction) were prescribed oxy contin for their pain. My friend was quite enjoying them haha :P

^ Just to clarify for anyone who doesn't know what endone is, they are 5mg oxycodone instant release tablets.

My grandma had surgery for a brain tumour a few months back and was put on panadeine fortes and endone. Then a month later she had surgery to remove lung cancer and they kept her on the endone and added oxycontin 20mg.

I was pretty surprised at the low level pain killers she was given for such serious surgeries but really I think its luck of the draw, some doctors are just more generous with pain relief than others. Just like how some doctors will put you on anti depressants for anxiety and others will happily fork out 50 xanax bars a month.

I get the impression they give you as little as possiable unless you bitch about it.

I was prescribed 10mg OxyNorms (IR oxycodone) and 50mg Tramadols for some broken bones in my hand (thumb mainly). Then panadeine forte after those scripts had been used up.

Was given IV morphine upon arriving to the ER, I assume thats common with immediate accidents like broken bones and alike.

drug mentor i agree with you off course, every doctor is going to vary, most seem to be stuck on anti depressants, which i dont need, and have done my time with many off the more common ones, which is why tramadol just makes me feel un-easy i think..
codiene does not a thing for me because off past abuse patterns and will probably end up in liver damage if given a pack off fortes. im curious about mysindol forte so fill do some research, have never heard off it. i plan to talk to the doc about it next appointment, but its not for a while and i don't wanna take this, but dont wanna be in pain.

puckboy your one off the lucky ones, i broke wrist, hand in several places and multiple fractured finingers and knuckles and had to wait to see hand specialist to get a box off fortes, and then only one for capadex and another fortes after the surgery. also had an arthoscopy(sp?) on my knee and (which has previously had 2 acl reconstructions) and had burns down one of my whole calf muscle around the same time.
i shoulda bitched more but im ony 22 and have had extreme pain experience since an early age so just kinda put up aith it for months.
now i know i will proabably be on something long term for my back so want to do it right, and ssri just not for me..

Damn, no one should have to be in pain when theres medication available that can stop it.

I should add they were going to give me panadeine forte, but I explained I'd abused opiates in the past and codeine wouldn't touch the pain due to tolerance at the time. The doctor looked a little annoyed but then without hesitation wrote the scripts for oxycodone and tramadol.

You don't need to 'bitch', just let them know fully that your in pain and what they're offering is not working or going to work from previous experience. If I'd never touched opiates in my life panadeine forte would have been fine.

you don't have to bitch about it at all, that will usually end up getting you nowhere. i don't agree with how we're made to jump through so many hoops to get the required treatment, but fighting the system is only going to set you back and more than likely you'll end up looking like a drug seeker

+1 it's all in your ettiquette

thanks, i realise this now, but at that time (early last year) i was to scard offf being marked on the system as a 'drug seeker' and it was tolerable, but it would have been nice to return to normal movment a lot earlier, im onlt just regaining proper use off right hand due to in-activity for so long..
next time i ride a motor bike into a wall at a mates house while drunk and on excesssive amounts off stillnox im gonna scream till they put me under..
like i said, pain is almost a drug in itslf for me, but off course opiatesd are always better... certain circumsctances require certain drugs. i was in excessive pain for a long period off time, which seriously dammaged my job, and me mental well being(bi-polar)

thanks puck, left, and silo.... usefull and interesting insights

over christmas i had to go to hospital cause i had an abcess in my mouth. They had to drain it with a needle every hour for nearly the whole day. Was pretty painful and the prescribbed me with panadeine fortes. I admittedly told the doctor that i didn't think they would really be good enough for the pain and i would probably end up smoking pot instead. He said normally he wouldn't say anything in that situation but because of the whole problem revolving around my mouth, smoking pot would probably be a really bad idea. I was then given a script for endone 5mg and was told not to go over board with them. Only take when really needed. Must admit 5mg was plenty enough for the actual pain.

Anyone have experience in OZ with what doctors prescribe for pain due to kidney stones?
