I am going to see a psychiatrist next week for social and general anxiety. I am an 18 year old healthy male. I was wondering what would most likely be prescribed to me or are there too many factors to consider? Are benzodiazepines pretty much the only drugs used to treat anxiety? I feel like a doctor would be a little hesitant to prescribe something like Xanax to an 18 year old because they would fear the patient would only abuse it. Can anyone who has been to a psychiatrist for anxiety shed a little light on this?

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this so move it if need be.

SSRIs, despite their many, many shortcomings, are usually the first drugs that a psychiatrist would give a new patient presenting with anxiety.

Depends on if you've tried any meds already, and which ones.

We aren't psychics. But I will say that I was only 19 when my psychiatrist prescribed me Xanax at my first appointment with him. Actually, Xanax IR and Xanax XR. So it's not out of the question, but I've learned some docs don't particularly like handing out benzos to very young adults. Just due to the dependence liability and they don't believe for whatever reason that you can be trusted.

The first time my old psych prescribed me a benzo it was klonopin 1mg twice a day and before he even printed out the script he said "Ok so let's lay down some ground rules. No taking extras, no crushing, snorting, etc, no drinking, and last but not least, PLEASE don't sell them on the bench/steps in front of your dorm building (I was in my first semester of college and was 18 at the time)" lol.

Additionally, there are a lot of drugs to treat anxiety. Propranolol, Buspirone, some use gabapentin or pregabalin, Nardil (a rare one with tons of restrictions), and hydroxyzine to name a few off the top of my head.

Also, my psych actually prescribed me adderall XR off-label for "treatment-resistant depression" and honestly, it worked great for my anxiety too. Specifically, i was on addy XR for 2 weeks then switched to Vyvanse for about 3-4 weeks. It worked great, but my appetite was shit. I felt so sick if I ate, and if I'd eat, I would feel so sick afterward. So I got off of it.

Good luck with your appointment!

To be fair to doctors, I was first prescribed a benzo at 14. I don't think that that's common practise, though. My GP is extremely liberal.
