Long story made shorter: I am recently unemployed. I am returning to school in a week. What am I eligible for as far as government assistance programs go? Food stamps? Medicaid?

I've heard with food stamps they check your bank accounts for how much money you have--I have quite a bit socked away (8K). I've also heard your eligibility depends upon who you live with and how much you pay rent. While I'm not asking here how to cheat the system and get something I shouldn't, I live with my mom who makes 70K+ a year, and she's not charging me rent--I feel this would automatically disqualify me from getting food stamps...

Can I get unemployment? I had my last job since March (until August). Job before that I held for three years.

Is there anything else I'm eligible for?

I'm against freeloaders on the system, but I've been payin' into it since I was 15 (I'm 22 now). I feel I deserve something while I'm goin' back to school, lawl.

If you have 8G's saved, and are able to work, why would you possibly need any type of gvt assist? I'm sorry, but you ARE trying to beat the system, and that is WHY the system is fucked up. You say you paid into it all this time and want to get something back....so you're okay with those of us who are WORKING for a living having to pay for your lil govt paid vacation? When you were working hard, would YOU be okay with YOUR hard earned cash going towards something like that? To someone who doesn't really NEED it?

Besides unemployment, which you would be rightfully entitled to depending on the situation (you'd have to see if you qualify), there isn't any other assistance you would LEGALLY and MORALLY qualify for.

The best answer? Get another job!!!!

Lawl, I would get another job, but I need to focus on school. I know many people can balance school and work, but I cannot. I tired it once before--took me three years to get a two year degree that isn't worth SHIT.

I guess I am trying to beat the system, but I don't feel like this is a vacation in any way, shape, or form--I'm going back to school. Like I said, I really cannot do both. And while sure, I could afford groceries and whatnot from my savings, I feel if other people can get government assistance for this shit without EVER working, I should be able to while I'm working on my education.

And as far as health insurance, that's kind of a necessity. If other people can get it for free without having EVER worked, why should I be paying $200+ a month for insurance worse than what they're getting for FREE?

You have to ask yourself ONE simple question, do you really NEED assistance? Most likely, with almost 10G's saved, the answer should be a resounding NO!

Sure, a lot of people get assistance without ever having to work, and that is wrong, and why our sytem is so fucked up. However, if you use that attitude to rationalize that YOU beating the system is okay, then you're no better than any of those mooching assholes.

As far as health insurance goes, you should be eligible to be on your parent's insurance if you are still a FT student. If you aren't, then there are govt programs that offer discounted insurance, which is different than medicaid, where you wouldn't pay into the system at all.

Just look at it like this...there may be a time down the line that you really NEED help, and if for some reason, the system craps out because of all the people who use it unnecessarily, you'd be kicking yourself in the ass.

I think you know the right answer here...you aren't going to be eligible for any kind of assistance with that savings acct, hence, you would have to hide it in order to be approved, which boils down to one thing.....fraud. Which could potentially end up with you in a lot of trouble...not to mention the fact that it is morally wrong to take help when you don't really need it. Don't lower yourself to the level of all of the losers who are content with taking govt help when they don't really need it. If those people didn't exist, the system would be great, being able to help those who really DO need it. Sadly, it's THOSE people who usually can't get it.

I SO agree with what she said!

I think what you're looking for might be taking excess student loans. That will let you pay for food/rent/gas/basically anything. You can pay it back once you finish school and can make a decent income AND you don't even have to cheat the system!
