I started wellbutrin SR this summer and over the last 6 weeks have built up to 300 mg daily. Now for the last couple of years I've been on vyvanse with no problems. I've kept my tolerance nice and low by allotting myself a month and a half break from it during each summer.

Starting it up again while on wellbutrin I have noticed an enormous reduction in the effects. My question is whether I have inadvertently built up a tolerance to dextroamphetamine by taking the wellbutrin or if the wellbutrin is just canceling out the effects.

They're probably canceling each other out to a certain extent. Vyvanse is a releaser and Wellbutrin is a reuptake inhibitor - these two classes of drugs tend to cancel each other out. In addition, Wellbutrin is a mild stimulant by itself and has probably increased your stimulant tolerance (this includes tolerance to amphetamines).

Coming from my doctor, they're really not meant to be taken together.

Vyvanse is a short term solution for ADD while wellbutrin is more long-term. Combining them can result in anxiety, paranoia, seizures and increased heart rate.

Thanks for quick replies.

Thanks, you seem to have hit the nail on the head, but intuitively it seems like a drug that causes more dopamine/norepinephrine to be released and another drug that stops the reuptake of that dopamine/norepinephrine should potentiate the effects. (I completely agree with you but conceptually I'm lost)

It's pretty complex pharmacology to explain the whole thing (and to be honest I don't completely understand it either...) but that's what ends up happening in the end (they cancel each other out). You also have to remember that Wellbutrin works on other systems besides just serotonin/NE reuptake inhibition.

Renz makes a good point though - don't mix these medications unless directed to by your doctor.

I have also read that Wellbutrin prevents amphetamines from working properly, probably due to its DRI effects messing with amp's abilities to play with the DAT and VMAT2. Some clarity would be nice, as I have wondered about this as well.

Hopefully, Sekio or Epsilon Alpha will chime in soon and drop some knowledge. :)
