Wellbutrin to treat ADD..

I rememeber that wellbutrin was going to be used as an ADD medication. It might help with the use of ritalin or adderall or maybe just by itself? I don't think I have ADD, but I have noticed some better concentration on wellbutrin SR150, just once a day. I'm thinking about asking my doctor, but I thought I would get a more honest answer here.
 
Wellbutrin is used in some patients with ADHD. The stimulants (methylphenidate, amphetamines) are used in the vast majority of patients because they are more effective than any other drugs. There is some evidence that wellbutrin is effective for treating ADHD; the response rate is still lower than stimulants and the degree of symptom control is less also. (it is more effective for depression than for ADHD). It is also an off-label use of the drug (which is allowed) because its only fda approved for depression and smoking cessation. So most psychiatrists consider wellbutrin to be a 2nd or 3rd line medication (along with the tricyclics) and only try it after one or two different stimulants don't improve your symptoms, or you can't take stimulants for some reason. It could be useful for people with ADHD and comorbid depression since they might show improvements in both disorders.
I don't think it is considered to be as safe as stimulants though. It can lower the seizure threshold and there have been a couple of seizures reported. Seizures are surprisingly uncommon in people taking stimulants at therapeutic doses (even those with a seizure disorder). It would probably not be prescribed with methylphenidate since they both can lower the seizure threshold. Many doctors prefer not to prescribe multiple psychiatric medications at the same (polypharmacy) time anyway since they can have complex interactions and few studies on the safety of various combinations exist.

AM pretty much summed it up, although I would disagree that the stimulants are safer than Wellbutrin. While Wellbutrin does indeed lower the seizure threshold, it is not as neurtoxic as the amphetamines are, and also, one doesn't develop a tolerance in nearly the same way one does to the stimulants. IMO, for long term use (and if Wellbutrin actually helps your ADD), Wellbutrin is a much better treatment than the stimulants.
I predict that the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors will soon be widely used to treat ADD. Look for these in the next few years...
