I've been precribed Wellbrutin recently for depression. I've searched around but wondering if anyone can give me their specific thoughts on this drug as an effective anti-depressant. In th past I've been on Prozac which didn't do much, and most recently Pristiq which I finally got off due to some side effects including headaches, though I did like the extra energy I seemed to get from Pristiq. It sounds like Wellbutrin provides a similar pep for most? Also, I have a moderate dependence on Xanax as well as Hydrocodone - is it possible the Wellbutrin could help with this? I believe I've been self-medicating with the opiates and benzos just to feel better but need to do something different as those are causing other problems. Thx for any insights.

Wellbutrin (Bupropoin) is a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor. Many have reported an increase of energy on this, and also many find it very effective when combined with an SSRI. And no there is nothing about wellbutrin that will help you quit hydrocodone nor alprazolam in the short term. You say you are self-medicating, when in fact I am sure you enjoy the buzz these substances give you, and no psychotropic medicines can produce effects even resembling those of hydrocodone or alprazolam.

I just started taking Wellbutrin with my dose of Paxil, so I havn't had enough time on the medication to get any effects. I've heard it helps to quit smoking, that most people lose alittle bit of weight when taking it, and that you might get a bit of increased anxiety for the first couple weeks.

i been on wellbutrin, it worked nice for me, no negative effects like SSRI's, and ya smoke less cigarettes, it has qualities like amphetamines but no where close, u can study , focus more, etc..

Cool, I don't really smoke cigs anymore but sounds like it'll help keep things that way. I'm prescribed the Xanax for stress/anxiety so it should counter any negative effects from the Wellbutrin around that. I would like to also get off the opiates but that's another issue. I've just found that when I'm feeling better/more energetic I'm less likely to seek other things to help me feel better (ie hydro and oxy). Yeah I get a small buzz from them but it's really more like an energy boost at this point. Hoping that the Wellbutrin will at least diminish the need for that somewhat.

I've been taking Wellbutrin XL for 5 years. I started at 150mg once daily, then went up to 300mg once daily, and recently went up to 450mg once daily. Before being put on Wellbutrin XL I tried several SSRIs and an SNRI and they didn't work but Wellbutrin XL works for me. It helps me feel stimulated, focused and generally up and about. It reminds me of Amphetamine because I feel stimulated the same way (although not even close in terms of euphoria). It should be no surprise though as Bupropion (Wellbutrin XL) is similar in molecular structure to Phenethylamine (Amphetamine is also similar in structure to Phenethylamine).

I would say if you're always feeling tired, sedated, no energy, overweight, Wellbutrin XL could be a good treatment option.

Wellbutrin is the only antidepressant that ever worked for me, I disagree with the poster who said it won't help with your other addictions, for me it evened me out and I didn't feel the need to take as much xanax and I quit drinking completely while I was on it mainly because I didn't feel the need to take other substances to escape anymore. This is just my experience though.

It definitely made me feel like I was thinking clearer and gave me more energy. I think it's a great antidepressant for those who need a stimulating antidepressant and don't want the side effects of SSRI's. I had virtually no side effects while I was on it. It did eventually lose some of it's effectiveness for me after awhile though.

It's like amphetamine without any of the euphoria or up/down rollercoaster effects that amphetamines can have. Definitely give it a shot, half my immediate family has benefited from it at different points in time.

Interesting. Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate it. I'm starting to notice a little extra energy already after a few days, definitely going to give it a shot.

I take wellbutrin regularly with adderall, as perscribed for my ADD. Although, the only noticeable difference i ever noticed was the first two/three days i took wellbutrin i had no cravings for cigarettes really, "euphoria" if you can even call it that, and brighter colors.. after that adderall effects outweighed the wellbutrin stimulant effects.

took many meds to try and find the rite one that worked for me and wellbutrin didnt.along with a long list of others that didnt ...
I am currently on venlafaxine xr 150mg +37.5 mg together 187.5 mg taken in the morning and its worked better than all the others ive been on.
But there will always still be those days whe yer just feeling down.
but on these meds i dont seem to have 1 side effect at all.
You can ask yer doc about it .
but i will say that wellbutrin works very well for most ,just not me....
