Welcome to Philly Drug Sign Removed After Dividing Neighborhood
By Alison Burdo
Aug 9, 2014

A resident fed up with the crime plaguing his Philadelphia neighborhood decided to post a dramatic, custom-made sign to draw the attention of city officials.

The sign, which violated a city ordinance, was removed by the Philadelphia Fire Department Friday evening, but not before others in the community took notice.

Attached to a telephone pole on C Street near Cambria Street in the city's Kensington section, the sign lists multiple terms for various illegal drugs -- dope, pcp, angel dust, ecstasy, lsd, acid, crack, cocaine, coke and heroin -- directly below the line, "Welcome to Philadelphia," and above an arrow indicating the substances can be found in any direction.

"That's the only way we can get the attention of the city," according to the man responsible for posting the sign earlier this week.

The retired School District of Philadelphia employee, who did not want to be identified, said his neighborhood is infested with drugs.

"This is the way we live here," he said. "For years and years, it's drugs everywhere you go here."

Latoya Dixon, a neighbor, had mixed feelings regarding the sign.

"He's going to start a lot of trouble around here," she said.

Despite her initial reaction, Dixon said many of the man's statements about the neighborhood are true.

"It is very dangerous around here," she said. "Heroin addicts around here. It is a lot of stuff that is going on that the kids can't play outside."

Another resident agreed, describing how common drugs are in Kensington.

"You see every corner and there's drugs around," said Bengi Cruz. "It's not a good thing if you want to come and live in Philadelphia."

Members of the Philadelphia Police's East Detectives Division said they are aware of the problems, but the sign had to come down.

Someone should tell that guy not to worry the drug war will take care of this.. after forty years of failure, indicated by the comment "This is the way we live here," he said. "For years and years, it's drugs everywhere you go here," its certain work this time. No it wont and the very violent unpleasant situation will continue to get worse.

lol how do you put up a sign disparaging groups of people that take note of more or less anything that happens in their neighborhood yet wish to remain anonymous? even if people agree with him, it won't matter because if all these people stopped selling drugs they would simply resort to more violent crimes to eek out a living because it's not like there's going to suddenly be an influx of employment oppurtunities because one ex-school official tried to "clean up our streets" in one of the lamesf possible ways

let me be the first to say, at least in that area... FAT CHANCE

and just to give credit where credit is due, I saw the sickest Allen Iverson warmup jacket in existence on Boudinot St and that is literally right next to C St.

so they must be doing something right

as a matter of fact, I never had any issues with the lettered streets. certain numbers, not so much

do people get shot over drugs sometimes? yeah, of course. no denying that

usually they probably did something to deserve it...

do innocent bystanders get hit sometimes?

yeah, can't deny that

but there's a story on BL every other day about how police threw a grenade and it landed on a baby's face or something to that degree so I can't even

also, nobody sells LSD (on the street at least) down there, not sure where that even came from

Crack, Heroin, Suboxone, PCP, powder cocaine (usually shit)

the real Philly Big 5, in that order

It's sad that in mid 2014 we still have to put up with this arrogant bullshit.

Hello - 4+ decades of the same shit still not working! Situation much worse! Perhaps it's time to make radical changes to broken ideas and promises!

I love the accent when some people say heroin, it's like HAIR ON.

Cool sign and vid.

He rekons he is going to get the sign back and put it up on his own property, I wonder how that's going to go.

Can you really find PCP and LSD anywhere in Kensington? That would be bizarre.

LSD, no. Psychadelics aren't really common in Kensington, or anywhere in Philly really. this isnt San Fransisco, people arent selling LSD to strangers. i'm sure it's AROUND somewhere because there's a million+ people, but gl walking up to a corner and getting legit LSD

PCP is the closest thing you will find to a psychadelic 99% of the time.

but yeah, PCP is everywhere. sometimes they will have a vial and let you dip a cig in it, sometimes they just sell you pre-dipped cigs. It's called either "wet" or "dippers" usually, ive never even heard the term "angel dust" actually used seriously

it's more profitable to sell crack or heroin 100/100 times, both due to customer base and supply really. There is a lot more heroin floating around then other drugs so it is easier for a small-scale dealer to get involved in that that other shit

also bricked weed from mexico, that is everywhere. you can get an ounce of mids (called reggie usually) for very cheap, and most of the heroin dealers I went to could also throw me a dime bag of reggie (1G) or at the very least be like "yeah ____ has the tree, he's around the corner"

it's a very professional atmosphere for the most part, I have to give them that. I am not an intimidating looking person by any stretch but I only got fucked with a few times. and now that I think about it, I probably came off as an undercover without even realizing it.

they may not be the most polite group of individuals, they may not ask you how your day is going, they may not ask you if you wanted to talk about anything that was bothering you, but you'll get your drugs if you got the money and don't make things awkward.

and if you can build a relationship with dealers, they will look out for you.

"hey those last bags were kind of beat, I threw you some extra this time"

"hey man, you know where I can get _____? I'll hook you up if so"

"you watch the Birds game on Sunday? telling you man Super Bowl monica"

the funniest conversation I ever had was with a dealer I had known for over a year. he was asking how much of a habit I had at that point in time and when I said it was more just an every now and then thing, he just nodded and said

"I gotcha, you're just tryin to feel some typa way"

most of them get it, sometimes they just get put in a jam financially through nothing that you did and have tighten the notches on the belt so to speak. But I also get that, and it is still easier to get heroin in Philly than pretty much almost anywhere else in the US.

So I really can't talk too much shit on people from Kensington. Sure, the average resident might be a bit obnoxious with the sob stories of being sick or needing a dollar or a Newport, but the actual dealers are usually all business.

and all you really have to say to beggars is "nah sorry man, im broke as shit" and they look for the next person to mooch off of. I also smoked Marlboro Reds and can put an emotionless face on at will so it kind of worked itself out.

the only thing of worth about junkies is the fact that they know where the best drugs are at. they arent going to rob you because they want their fix. If you tell them you'll hook them up, you can get on the fast track to drugs. I just preferred to cut out as many people as possible because I was already going to the ghetto so therefore I wasn't looking for middlemen. But if youre cold copping and dont want to roll the dice, there's always junkies around to help you out, if you help them out

The reason everyone from poor urban areas are so cold and rude is because you have to be or you get taken advantage of. So until you prove that you are good with the money, you don't get much interaction with them besides "how many bags you need?"

Or you drive south to bmore or north to jerz lol. There is so much dope in the midartlantic its crazy. Dope coke crack Rx pills dust, and that's streetbdrugs, if you know some hippies you can get all the psych drugs and if u know some gau guys you can get some meth lol

Philly has always reminded me of bmore except way bigger. Most of the dope is the same it just gets milled in coffee grinders to fill the wax bags. We don't have the wax fold bags down here. Its vials and those little ziplock bags/bag corners.

Don't know how well that guys sign is going to work for him. Seems like that could cause as lot of beef between neighbors.

Subotai- I hate to post on this old ass thread, but I just had to say I think it's kinda weird you mentioned Boudinot st in Philly. I used to get dope from this dude off Boudinot in the 'Nati! Lol just thought it was a funny coincidence!
