Welcome to NA&SA Social's First Friday Thread!!!

how much longer does she have? once you have a master's in psychology, you have tons more options for careers and such. i also recently learned that you only need a master's degree to teach at a community college which is kinda cool.

You can teach at some with a BS/BA. Someone recommended that to me if I couldn't find something to do while finishing a higher degree, or if I needed money before continuing on.

You can teach at a lot of regular colleges with a masters... though it would be lower-level stuff only, just above what teaching assistants get to do (student teachers working on their masters). You basically have no room for advancement though.

i knew you could do that if you went thru teach for america, but they are absurdly picky about GPA's. my friend applied with them to teach science or math (both of which are in high demand) and they refused to consider him because his GPA was .05 off of minimum cut off. can you teach without going thru americorps/teach for america?

Yeah, I don't even know what americorp or teach for america is. A friend is doing this in the biology dept at a school in AR, and another 2 teaching english at diff schools in TX. These are community colleges... not a high school or university or anything like that. I'm sure policies probably vary from school to school and there may be state regulations in some places that interfere. I'm not very familiar with anything like that outside of schools in the mid-south, though.

happy friday!

leaving work early to go apt hunting, then i'll be in pixelvania for the remainder of the night. i'm hitting up a local art exhibition/festival in santa monica with a friend tomorrow, should be fun. sunday will be spent relaxing on the beach with some dank herb :)

pretty much, recent grads agree to teach in an area that really needs teachers in exchange for a salary and small education stipend. the figuring is that people might want to give up a few years of their time to teach before starting on their career. the program eliminates the need for you to have a teaching license.

ah. there is a state program here where you agree to teach math or science for a certain number of years after you get your license, and the state pats you on the back and vaporizes those student loans that are choking you to death, up to a certain amount anyway. so most people around here go for that. its for regular k-12 type schools though, no colleges or anything like that.

most people i know are only interested in teaching if its a the collegiate level. thats kind of neat though. i've considered teaching sciences of some sort, to give back, but I'd definitely not want to do it as a career, so I don't really want to put in the time to get licensed... plus I'd be afraid that if I got it with that intention, something would happen (financial problems or something) and I'd get stuck and end up doing it indefinitely.

for everyone else who may see this, check it out, looks amazing!

Its pre-friday!

I'm going to go get some gelato and go for a walk in the morning, before it gets all toasty again. *crosses fingers* hoping for some more rain. It went from 92 to 75 in about 30 min today after a thunderstorm, which was bad ass.

i have an interview today. there have to be non-psychotic bosses around here somewhere. i am not ready to sell my soul for a job.

and then tomorrow is my birthday, yay :)

^ Get a job you bum!:p ;)

I'm looking man, really hard. There is not a lot of work to be had in general, and especially where I live. Its particularly bad for computer/IT work, too. I've got friends that have been looking since Feb-May with no luck at all.

Its frustrating! I'll be boned when my unemployment runs out, too. I hope I can get an extension or something.
