People seriously over-think losing weight. There's absolutely no magic to it, you've just gotta consume less calories than you burn each day and then it's a scientific certainty that you'll lose body fat.

yup - and you can do that either by increasing calorie output, decreasing calorie consumption or a combination thereof (hint: changes to input tend to be far more efficient for this equation)

output>input
simple
not just simple- the *simplest* possible way it can be stated :)

HERE'S SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!! This is a passive way to lose weight (without exercising), that is an excellent starting point. After you adjust to the diet you can integrate exercise into your routine :).

This is called the 400 times 4 diet! Which means eat 400 calories 4 times a day. A total of 1600 calories a day.

FOODS YOU CAN'T EAT:
*Bread
*White Rice
*Pasta
*Butter
*White Flour Torrillas
*Chips
*Potatoes
*Any other 'empty carbs'
*Alcohol
*Cream/high fat dairy
*Limit sugar/sweets

If you cut out these foods you WILL lose weight without even trying!

Here is an example of a day of meals:

Breakfast:It is important to eat something high-fiber in the morning. This helps clean out your system and make it easier to lose weight! Try bran cereal with non fat greek yogurt (for protein!).

Lunch: Spinach tortilla with hummus, salsa, and fresh raw vegetables. This makes a tasty wrap! Feel free to add other sauces or spreads for flavor, just as long as they aren't high in calories or fat. Stay away from ranch or sour cream. Olive tapenade is a good one.

Dinner:Try a protein-rich salad. Use baby spinach, and make dressing out of simple olive oil and lemon juice, or olive oil and vinegar, salt and pepper. Add a can of tuna, kidney beans, tomatoes, and any other healthy salad components you like!

Snacks:Try to keep snacking to a minimum, but if you get really hungry here are some good options! Fresh fruit is always good, but don't overdo it. I love pineapple rods! Also anything high in antioxidants is good, such as blueberries, acaii, and pomegranate. Hummus and fresh vegetables is good. Celery and natural peanut butter (no skippy!), and SMOOTHIES!! Make a smoothie with greek yogurt, soy/almond/rice/skim milk, frozen or fresh fruit and berries, peanut butter and a handful of spinach. If you have a healthy protein powder, add it. This makes a tasty smoothie that is also rich in protein! Another good option is a protein shake made by ensure. I've compared many packaged protein shakes and theirs has the best ratio of protein to sugar and calories.

IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! :)

I hope this helps you! I lost about 15 lbs doing this, and another 15 when I started exercising daily. I started trying to lose weight when I was at my all time high weight of 149lbs ( I am 5'6 1/2") and now am all the way down to 123lbs. Good luck!

DISCLAIMER: I AM A 5'6 and a half" FEMALE. THE TOTAL CALORIES REFLECT WHAT IS APPROPRIATE TO SUSTAIN MY INDIVIDUAL ENERGY.. ALSO THE MEALS ABOVE ARE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT ONE COULD EAT, FOLLOWING THE LOOSE RULES OF THE DIET. THE MAIN POINT IS TO BE HEALTHY AND EAT EVEN SIZED MEALS :) :) :).

I'm skeptical of 'wonder' diets. Just avoid unhealthy foods and eat more of the healthy one, while expending the energy you get from food. It's not that hard.

Agreed! That's just something I made up, that worked for me and some of my friends...based on the same principles you just stated!

^lol thought it was some copy/pasta. eyes rushed over expecting to see 'oct 2012' ;P

i mean ya any diet that follows the rules would work. I see a lot of specifics there that i cannot imagine the reasons for. I could release a mcdonald's diet of higher quality and more efficacy. nevermind that a "total calories" instead of "calories/lbs" or something is, well, not so good..

congrats on your results though, that is a sizable loss! :)

hahaha that was just an example of what one COULD eat one day!... as I stated ;P! NOT what someone should eat ONLY every day hahaha... That would be absurd! I just was saying you should eat smaller meals that contain foods that are healthy and not on the do not eat list. I thought the example day was useful because a lot of people ONLY eat bread and pasta, etc. ;)

And I agree about the calorie/lbs thing... I should have said that was based on my height and weight and being female and all.

ohhhh hahaha bmxxx, you thought I was some spammer going to link to something for sale? ooo buy my diet secrets for 3 easy payments of $19.99!!!!!

I checked your other posts and came to the conclusion that you're an enthusiastic human. :p

But I stand by my statement. Complicated rules don't work in the longterm. It can make you feel like you're making ground by following a strict regime in the beginning, but the wheels generally fall off pretty quickly.

I was only trying to be helpful, lol :(

and everyone always makes fun of the way I type, my whole life! I guess I type like I'm skipping around and yelling... with too many " !!!" .

I might be at odds on my opinion of exercise/health with many people who post here, but I think there's much more to being healthy than going on a calorie restricted diet, and cardio, cardio, cardio. I mean, sure you'll lose body fat, but personally, I'd rather be content with my meals, not worry about being hungry all the time and have the energy to exercise/live how I want.

Over the last year i've cleaned up my diet (in the sense of not going crazy on fast food, better ratios of fat:protein:carbs etc). I probably eat around 3,000 (or just under that) calories a day, do weights 5 days a week and started skateboarding about 6-7 hours a week. I find this way I love doing all my exercise, always have plenty of energy, and generally feel great.

I just get a bit uncomfortable when I hear of people eating jack-all doing medium length cardio sessions all the time. Personally, I think that men and women who are toned and muscular (not body builder style, but just well shaped) are much more attractive and have a better quality of life than the walking skeletons who obsess over every calorie. I read a quote somewhere that "skinny girls look good in clothes, fit girls look good naked" and I think that's absolutely true. But in the end what's important is whatever makes people happy.

Just for context, I'm male, 20 years old, around 11% bf and I weigh 85Kg (no idea how many pounds that is, sorry =P)

being FIT makes people happy IME. people who starve themselves tend to be unhappy, and it sucks because crash-dieting is dumb IMO. Being fit is a LIFESTYLE, and 'crash' approaches are the opposite of lifestyle (or, if they are lifestyle, they're a shitty one).

And re your quote, I'd disagree - fit girls still look better clothed than skinny girls. Unnaturally skinny is about as attractive as unnaturally fat ;) The fit look is the best look, and for good reason - we're attracted to people who are healthy and happy, and fitness tends to be highly correlated to that ;P

Couldn't have said that better myself Bmxxx- it is a lifestyle, and listening to girls at uni talk about how they've just started some 4-week diet (but no exercise, apart from maybe a light walk) is mind numbing. There's no secret to it- good food, plenty of it and heaps of exercise.

the heaps of exercise is overdoing it if 'general' fitness / aesthetics are your goal (well, dependent upon your genetics, and your idea of "general").

yes, females tend to have that very badly, men to a lesser degree (although a lot of men also have similarly unhealthy obsessions with gaining muscle). I've dated girls who were obsessive on this - it consumes their lives (was actually with a puker b4, well not long after i found that out, but jesus christ she was one of the most unstable, saddest people you've ever met. You wouldn't guess that unless you knew her tho :/ )

weight-loss advice to end all weight-loss advice:

eat less
exercise some more

(the second part might not even be necessary)
