weekly 2-d art competition

ok well i'm doing my 1st life drawing class at uni and i find it really intimidating as i'm not very good with bodies and faces. It's also intimidating cos everyone in the class seems to be able to sketch really well already and i cant :(

Seeing as i can only put one up i'll put my favorite that happens to be a portrait piece (cos my bodies really do suck anyway :p) I had a sook to my teacher about the above and he said not to worry about trying to make it look like what i see and to try to not even look at the paper when i draw and just freely express with my hands and this is what turned out when i stopped trying to draw realistically...

thizzle, have you messed with googles picassa? its amazing at cleaning up photos! i had a crappy digital camera as well, but i was able to fix it up real nice (even improve it some) with picassa.

its no photoshop, but its not meant for editing... just touch up.
Thanks, I've never heard of that, I'll have to look it up. I'm not very good with any of the photoshop/technical stuff, so I hope its simple lol

original here
you hardly edited it.

some of you seem to be missing the point.

after round 1, no photography at all allowed.

what? no photography? that's BS.

if you don't like it, don't vote for it

ok, im gonna edit the rules in the next one.

im still workin on compiling these into a cohesive thread.

photography must be SIGNIFICANTLY MANIPULATED.

hows that?

^that is impossible to define.

it really doesn't matter if the manipulation is minor. they simply won't be voted for.

well im gonna include it in the hopes that stuff like chrissies (which is a good photo) dont get entered.

in a court of law, "reasonable doubt" is hard to define too...

doofqueen, your image is too large. ill edit it this time, unless you have an objection.

700x700

i might try a week allowing photos... but that just seems to be highjacking the other thread.

the IDEA behind this thread is the actual manipulation of a medium. not necessarily the result--the process.

a photograph, IMO, doesnt really fit that description, unless you spend time on photoshop altering it, or make a collage or something.

im not against photos, i just think theres already a thread for that.

Wesley I agree...........I was rather surprised that you would lump photoshopping in with art like so,me of the stuff I have seen in this thread............. I take alright pics but I would feel pretty rude trying to suggest they are even close to what you guys are able to do with pens and paint and crap.

actually i got an idea that might help you out...........keep watching.

lol @ wesley

thats soo not his name nor does he resemble a wesley in any way shape or form
Yeah I know that Dennis its just that his nick keeps making me think he is Wesley.

Soz Pierre.

keep smiling dude.

i vote for no photography in this thread...making the distinction of what is okay and what isn't would simply be too difficult.

plus changing a few minor things in a picture in photoshop doesn't really seem to fit with the idea of this contest to me...

^^ I agree... and theres already a photography thread...

thankyou Iamthoughts too by the way - my art is just so messy and everywhere but hey thats me =D

hardly edited? perhaps because you're not viewing them right up against each other you don't see the differences. roll over the image to flip between the two

ego_loss also did a photo manipulation but no questions were raised there. not speaking about his image but if i stuck a highly modifying filter all over the photo, you guys probably wouldn't care. but because i chose to tweak details of the photo by hand without totally losing the subject, it isn't enough. it is rather ridiculous to say that i didn't spend any time on this because i started with a photograph. a gesture drawing would have taken much less time but wouldn't have raised any questions.

there is a photography contest but those photos are not allowed to be manipulated. to be fair, i did ask if manipulated photos were admissible in the original discussion.

i hate how image manipulation is trashed in all of these competitions. the digital medium is just as valid as any other.
