Lately, whenever my buddy does a shot he leaves a little leftover and keeps it in a rig in case he gets sick and needs it later. I thought I remembered hearing that heroin, once dissolved in water breaks down into other stuff (codeine?) after a few days? Is that right? So can you keep some in an outfit and IV it say a week later? 2 weeks later? Or is it gonna be a big codeine shot and make you have a killer reaction? Or some other crappy thing?

I think it converts back to morphine after it is in water for a day or so.

If your buddy registers the shot, and then stops and saves it, it isn't good to use a shot that has coagulated blood in it. If he insists on doing it, then he should refilter the shot into a new syringe.

^what he said. It degrades into morphine.

The bigger concern for a week-old shot is the massive amount of bacteria that will have grown in there over the period of time. I'd throw it out, but at a minimum you should use a micron filter to reduce bacteria in the shot.

^no, it takes a lot more than an hour for the morphine to breakdown, more around maybe a couple of days or so as the OP said. the impression most people have is that it's going to happen almost instantly but it isn't the case.

it isn't the smartest/safest idea to prep a shot and leave it laying around for a couple of days when you're ready to have; a short amount of time, say maybe an hour or two in a refrigerator and it would be ok.

the safest way if you were to store it properly is in bacteriostatic water with a preservative and a sealed container/beaker.

check out this thread for the information you'll need to perform it. Micron Filtering Mega Thread and FAQ

If it's refrigerated that is true, but if it's left out at higher temperatures the hydrolysis can occur pretty freely. It doesn't go straight into morphine, one of the acetyl groups is much faster to react than the second, at least from what I've read. The intermediate form is stronger than morphine in terms of effect, so in that sense a huge difference probably wouldn't be felt until a few days at room temperature or higher.

For those wondering, we're talking about clean stuff, out of the cooker, not blood tainted stuff out of the syringe. So the only problems would be bacteria or it breaking down. What if he dumped it out and heated it up again, wouldn't that kill most bacteria?

And so the general consensus is it degrades to mrphine after a few days. Does it go further after a week or so? Say to codeine? Or is morhpine the end?

Sounds to me like it will all just convert into a big fat shot of pure cotton fever. Tell your buddy to just save a bit of the H instead of putting it all into the shot then saving some of that. It will keep its quality and it wont grow deadly levels of bacteria in the mean time.

I don't see why he doesn't just save some of it as is, instead of keeping it in a needle where it's probably going to end up getting him sick.

I usually save some in the cap (I prepare my shots in a bottle cap). The water evaporates pretty quick, and I do it later, however, it's usually just for a little boost a few hours later, not a week. Also it takes more than an hour for the acetyl groups to fall off

That is such a bad idea. He needs to be more concerned about the health risk with shooting straight up bacteria in his veins then the h breaking down. I wouldn't trust it no matter what precautions I took to avoid the blood making me sick. Esp for a week! I don't do h so I don't relate to being dope sick but I'm an addict and what I don't shoot right away don't get shot.

you said he'd shoot it, and leave a little in the rig after each shot, therefore there is blood in the rig. a clot is a very real situation that can happen here. also, bacteria growth, another real threat.

it's been covered but the blood in the rig combined with its sitting for a while is a bacteria nightmare, and from what I know most of the heroin left in a rig in a prepared shot will almost completely revert to morphine in less than 48 hours, but your drugs losing potency is the least of your worries in this case. This is a good way to get sick (seriously) man be careful. Just go score and say goodbye to that nasty shit

yeah, if you want to save some, someone said it best up in the thread somewhere. save a little in each pill, or bag.
